The aluminum one CAN be overtightened! I've used a 2ft 1/2 inch breaker bar to get more
    than one loose!
If it somehow 'stops', then what could keep it from coming loose?
You wouldn't need a wrench to tighten it, you could just do it by hand.

Sorry, I'll just have to disagree. I have 2 mounted on a Prius, and a Corolla. It cannot be overtightened. The o-ring resistance is adequate to keep the housing from coming loose, as long as the housing is tightened on enough to obtain the resistance. Yes, after sitting on the car for 6 months, I do also use a breaker bar to loosen it, but it doesn't require power tools, it breaks free readily with the breaker bar. It would probably be easily loosened with a ratchet wrench as well, but I try not to abuse my ratchets.

ANY bolt, nut, screw, whatever, CAN be over tightened.
Plenty of mechanics have proven it.

That is the filter cap on my Scion iQ. The filter is oriented more vertically, so one is supposed to drain the oil from that prior to removing the cap. If you want to do that there is the gasket available separately or packaged in the iQ specific filter. The iQ specific filters also include a drain tool that you either screw in or press in to press a spring loaded valve. If you don’t use the tool no oil comes out, and you’re left with a lot of oil coming out with the cap. For security there is that small o-ring on the small drain cap.

Since I prefer Fram Ultra filters I just do not touch the small cap, which I believe a 3/8” extension fits nicely IIRC, as the filter dimensions are exactly the same as the Prius, but Prii filters do not include the small gasket nor drain tool.

What I wasn’t sure about was whether the thread pitch and size were the exact same on the main filter cap…

I’m not sure if it’s an Al alloy or pure Al. I do not think it is pure Al. (Pure Al bolts feel like fake metal, I assume a pure Al cap would feel unusually light)…

We have Al bolts in my wife’s other car. They are torqued to yield: torque plus degree angle. Once removed, service manual says they need to be replaced…

I’d still use a torque wrench and I follow what’s noted on the cap.

What’s up, so I’m going bring up an old thread because people are still getting broken cartridges. Toyota upgraded these filter housings to a spin on because they thought it would get better engine life and less damage to piston rings caused by dry start.. The benefits of a screw on filter are
    • Anti Drain Valve - Keeps Oil from from draining out of the Filter when the Engine is Off. Prevents Dry Starts
    • More Filter Options
    • Utilizes same tool to remove Canister Filter
    • Better Access to remove Filter
    • Better Filtration then Cartridge

If you say so I don't think Toyota did anything like that people wanted to spin on filter so they got the housing from a Corolla Z series engine Corolla which is pretty much all of them and fitted that where the casting for the cartridge goes which doesn't really need an anti drain back valve given where the filter is does that make sense It's as low as the oil pan is nothing's going to drain back anywhere It's going to flood the cartridge I do believe I don't think there's any oil pressure issues with the cartridge Mercedes still runs cartridges and they don't generally have lots of engine problems related to oil failure Prius doesn't have a lot of engine failures related to oil pressure at all for the most part till you don't have any in the car or the engine which is not the car or engines fault that's the humans but be that as it may generally you just need the block that screws up to the engine instead of having that plastic housing that holds a cartridge it has a spin on 4967 I think it is acceptance size so there's always that I do believe I think the same bolts that hold the cartridge housing on I do believe will hold the spin on adapter on. I can't imagine how much other stuff you might need but I'm sure folks will be a long directly to get it squared away If you go buy a junkyard and just peek under a Corolla you'll see the deal and then you could just unbolt it off said Corolla like at LKQ which is a big junkyard in the east

    1. It seems the stock filter in below the oil level.
    2. Meh, I see plenty
    3. Yes and...
    4. How's that? The stock filter housing is small.
    5. OK ! I'm interested. Do you have data?

The same wrench that takes off the cartridge housing takes off the 4967 or whatever filter spin on it takes seriously I'll have to go out and look at that I guess it's possible but usually I try to use a 3600 where the 4967 or their little filter went on my generation twos I'm running 3600s no problems they run great they're taller a little more oil and more square inch filter area etc No it's not near hitting the ground but in a generation 3 it would stick out enough and probably get too close to something.
