Denso has a few videos on how to tell fakes.

Trouble is the counterfeiters watch the videos too. It's an arms race.

Buy parts from reputable sources only. Never heard of anybody getting a fake directly from a Toyota dealer. Many locations the price is considerably lower if it is ordered through their web site. Shop around, dealer prices vary on the exact same item. Sadly Toyota's own parts site removed the ability to do this easily, so now one has to go to each site individually or some will be missed.

Never heard of a fake from RockAuto.

Amazon, EBay? Assume new ones are fakes. Not sure about used parts. Given the level of larceny on these sites I can imagine some neer do well dirtying up a fake and selling it as a used OEM.

I've looked stuff up on Amayama, which has a decent interface, then plug the part no's in at Toyota USA's gong show.

Right, Toyota broke their site in (at least) two ways. The first was that it became more difficult to find a part by description. Looking them up on Amayama works around that. I sometimes use RockAuto the same way, the aftermarket parts usually list the OEM part number to which they correspond. The second was that they used to have links to all the local dealers from the page for a given part, so one could quickly click through those to find the local online prices. Now, while it still lists some dealers, many are no longer accessible in that manner. My guess is that Toyota now charges for this service, and some dealers didn't want to pay. So to check everybody locally requires a lot more work, entering the same values into each dealer's web site.

Most any dealer does not list parts for the 2025 Camry which has been on the market for 10 months now. Toyota parts listings are a genuine mess!

Yeah, ebay has a significant reputation for fakes, just as bad as Amazon. You get what you pay for, and don't get what you don't pay for. Stick with Rock Auto. ANYTHING listed as GENUINE Toyota parts is merely made by a Chinese company named Genuine, not actually OEM. Very deceptive advertising.

It's hysterical to the fakes or are great If you look at them carefully look at lettering stamping in the metal and stuff like that it is just like something out of the cartoons I think it's on purpose sometime like it's jokes or the maker of the fakes knows exactly the kind of people that are going to get stuck with these things and this is there whatever It's just really uncanny very targeted something.

Best of all options. I have one Toyota dealer in town that I use if I'm in a time sensitive situation. Luckily they have the best prices and are only 15 minutes away. For those who choose this option, most dealers have a website where you can see 'online' prices, make the order/purchase ahead of time and schedule a time for pickup that day. Price check ALL your local dealers and I'm confident you'll find one that is always less expensive than the others. We have a local dealer that is typically 30-40% higher on replacement parts. I avoid them like the plague. Don't be the person that just goes to the closest dealer and hopes for the best, you could just be burning money.

I'd qualify that Amazon is generally reputable, IF you buy directly from Amazon and not an Amazon third party seller. There is a big difference.

I found this posted on the BITOG forum. Toyota is currently running 25% off online parts. Coupled with free shipping on $75+, you can get genuine Toyota parts and take advantage of discounts better than from your local dealer parts counter. Dealerships vary in pricing and a few offer better discounts than others. This one seems to have pretty nice prices. The 25% off and shipping will be discounted in cart at checkout. https://autoparts.toyotaofdecatur.com

For example, the Denso SK16R11 plug is $6.38 and the Toyota oil filter is $3.11. I also filled the cart with wiper inserts, pcv valve, and a replacement door release plastic trim piece that ended up being cheaper than a used one from eBay.

Hmm, are you sure that part is a fake? My Denso O2 sensor had an all black cable cover too. It's not unusual for the parts to differ in appearance slightly depending on date of manufacture. Could it be that your cat is bad, causing the sensor to go bad prematurely? For how long has your most current replacement been installed?

I sometimes buy third party from Amazon IF the third party is a Toyota dealer.

That question reminds me that I really haven't seen in this thread what actual trouble code(s) might have led to the excitement.

Can a bad cat cause a sensor to go bad? Eh, hmm, maybe, never-say-never ...

Can a bad cat cause the sensors to do their job telling you the cat is bad? Definitely ... in which case calling the sensor bad would be blaming the messenger.
