Hello everyone, I am in a little bit of a pickle and would greatly appreciate advice from seasoned Prius veteran.

I drive a 2007 Prius. Recently I have had a P1151 error code, which was linked to the coolant heat storage tank. Mechanic confirmed the diagnostic and advised me to get a new tank. I ordered a replacement part (16660-21010 OEM) which was installed yesterday.

Today when I drove my car, the engine light came back on, reading the same error code (P1151). In addition, I am now getting the Red Triangle light from time to time: it usually comes on, stays on for 10-15sec and then goes away. This happens roughly every 10-15 minutes.

After reading through some posts on this forum, I have a couple questions and request for advice:

1 - Is it possible that the mechanic didn't bleed the air properly from the new tank after replacing it ? Can it cause the red triangle to trigger? I am really confused on why it comes on -- I had never seen it before the new tank got installed.
2 - Is the car safe to drive? (my commute is ~15miles)
3 - My 2007 Prius has ~145K miles on it. It's recently given me a lot of trouble (stolen cat, this coolant heat storage tank thing...) and it's been pretty stressful to deal with. Is it worth doubling down and trying to further fix it?
4 - If I was trying to sell it as is, without further fixes, how much could I hope to get for it ? (I'm located in the Bay Area, CA if that helps)

I apologize if some of those questions are a bit vague or hard to answer. I am really lost and desperate, and would really appreciate any advice here.

    Thanks a lot!

    Hello and welcome to PriusChat!

For your warning light, is it just the red triangle, or do any other ones come on as well? This light can turn on if there's problems such as a door is open when the car is in gear. Or if engine oil pressure is low, coolant temperature is too high (there are other small icons that pop up on the central screen as well).

Or it can come on if there are faults with something in the hybrid drive system - but that usually turns on a number of additional amber warning lights as well.

First thing to do is to check the engine fluid levels. Oil and coolant. For coolant, when the engine is "cold", confirm the level is full in the radiator, not just in the plastic overflow tank.

Also look at the coolant in the inverter system in the tank on top of the transmission. (When the car is "ready", the coolant in there should swirl around from the electric pump)

I do not know how much detail you want. If you're not DIY then here's the basics. Most generic scantools only check the engine computer (ECM) for codes. Diagnostics require using a much more capable tool to check all 15-16 systems on your Gen 2 Prius.

I would like to think that a competent shop has such a scantool, but not always. I prefer to see a diagnostic report that lists each of the systems & whether it had any codes present or not.

For the coolant heat storage (CHS) system. It's a thermos tank that keeps coolant inside hot for a few days. Pump coolant in on shutdown, pump it out before startup. This speeds engine warmup & reduces cold start emissions.

There are 2 sensors to track coolant temperature - 1 for the engine and 1 for the CHS. P1151 sets because the ECM doesn't like what it sees from those 2 sensors when using the CHS.

Anyone diagnosing this needs a capable scantool to monitor (graph) those 2 sensors during a cold start. To see what the system does. Is the pump actually working. Are both sensors accurate and do they go up (and by how much) when the pump runs.

the CHS rarely fails, if you can hear it running after turning off the car then it's working fine. Most of the time when it's low in coolant or wasn't bleed properly that it causes the red triangle (RTOD) due to overheating. I don't know how competent your mechanic is when diagnosing but blaming the tank (CHS) quickly doesn't seem ideal. I have the P1151 code on my 425k miles Prius and it was the relay that caused the issue. Driving the car is not safe when the RTOD is showing up without diagnosing the cause and it will lead to major problems if not addressed quickly (head gasket or engine failure)

Right anything in that circuit can be to blame relay temperature sensor the main temperature sensor the pump funny thing is though you always hear the pump running and when you get in the car in the morning and turn it on you can hear the pump pump in that warm cooling or whatever's in the CHS tank into wherever they want it to go into the system whatever I mean it sounds like the whole fender's about to rattle off the car and for a good second too I don't want to say a minute because it isn't that long and then it cuts off and everything is quiet and then after shutdown 5 hours it's supposed to sample the water for some reason and I guess if it doesn't like what it sees at that sample when you boot the car up next it'll tell you so but none of this should keep the car from running and driving just fine and all other systems working okay and your gas mileage should be unaffected this is strictly for the first few seconds your car starts up I'll say in the morning whenever your morning might be and that's that so I guess you could drive with this like this for essentially ever because my other half was driving the silver car like this for a year or so and then it actually stopped coming on the code for the 11:51 and nobody had changed anything cars never overheated never been low on coolant and either of the systems and all of that It used to set the 11:51 more in the winter than in the summer and now it's been over a year since it has said it at all and nothing has changed nothing the coolant heat storage tank is never been damaged on the car and never been hit squished nothing the pump runs fine

without you knowing the RTOD is a recipe for disaster. My experience with p1151 code is that the previous owner hacked the cooling system when the 3 way valve failed. The he disconnected (removed) the relay for the CHS tank. Once I have everything fixed (new 3 way valve) and restored the coolant connections the RTOD resurfaced due to coolant being low. Upon investigation why it's getting low is because of bad head gasket.

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice , it feels better to have a direction to investigate.
This is what I have done so far:
    - I bought a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner and checked for error codes using the Torque pro app. I ran tests and checked the logs and nothing, no error codes, nothing. Also the dash is cleared at the moment (no check engine light, no red triangle). I tried the tests with the engine / A/C on, but nothing. I didn't try to drive the car with the sensor in though.
    - I checked the engine oil level: everything is good there.

At the moment it is just the red triangle coming on intermittently (like for 5sec, every 10-15 min), no other warning lights. I did have a check engine light before, which read error code P1151 again immediately after CHS tank replacement, but my mechanic cleared it so unsure if that's why it's not back.

Looking at the coolant is on my list of to-do's. I have never done it so I would have to learn and check how to (this is my first car and I am not a super DIY hero yet, but learning thanks to you guys!). But the more I read and think about the issue, the more I feel like it might be an air bubble in the coolant loop (the fact that I had the CHS code, the fact that my mechanic said he had trouble bleeding the air out and topping off the coolant, the fact that the red triangle started showing up immediately when I got my car back from the CHS tank replacement ....)

I think this is the key for me. My mechanic told me he never saw that CHS error code before, and immediately told me to replace the tank without running thorough diagnostic. My CHS tank was probably fine ( I could hear the pump running when I start/stop the car, it was a little loud but nothing bad). He is a super nice guy so I can't fault him, but I feel like maybe he hasn't dealt with something similar before. He also mentioned several time he struggled to bleed the air after replacing the tank.

I think I probably have to go see a different mechanic, maybe specialized in hybrid vehicles and with more experience, that can further troubleshoot. My guess is that the issue (red triangle/engine light) happens after driving for a bit because the engine is not cooled properly.

    - Is it a good idea to get a second opinion and more thorough test mentioning the CHS issues + replacement?
    - Would I be safe to drive ~15 minutes to a mechanic or should I get the car towed for safety?

Thank you guys for the advice, I feel less lost!

If when you see the red triangle come on if you shift your eyes to the multifunction display within tenths of seconds of seeing the triangle you should see the green car in the left of the upper display in the center of the car showing red with a thermometer right through the car. If this is the case there's your air bubble when you get home let the car sit about an hour until you can go out and release the pressure without letting a bunch of coolant go and then you want to fill the radiator with about a 3/8 diameter stream coming out of your jug slowly it will take you about 40 minutes to fill the car up with no air It's a very slow pouring process the coolant comes up to the top of the filler neck you watch it blub its way back down the neck You keep repeating this and repeating this Do you feel like you're about to want to hurt somebody and then finally the coolant will stand at the top of the radiator neck right there where it's getting ready to dump into the little hole to head to the reservoir walk away for an hour go do something else when you come back the coolant will be gone again fill it back up. Now go mow the grass or something when you come back Is the water where it was when you left nope put it there Go trim the hedges come back is the water where you put it No you see any dripping on the ground coming out of any hoses on the timing cover on the side of the motor any of that No fill it back up If it never holds at the top of the filler neck then you need to pull the plugs and get the inspection camera rented Make sure you don't have a head gasket leak this is where I am right now with a '09 I'm almost positive water is disappearing to the tune of a third of a gallon in 30 mi.
