I recently started driving a 2012 with navigation and I noticed the volume button does not reliably go up or down when I rotate it. It senses the movement, but goes up 2, down 1, up 1, down 2 and basically stays at the same place when turned clockwise. I have deoxit and read that it should help with the volume knobs on newer digital devices. I wanted to pull off the knob and give it a small spray. Looking for some advice here Has anyone taken off that knob? I pulled pretty hard and it had one short movement, but didn't come off. Is deoxit the right product and would this help? Can i use deoxit with the knob on? or some other method. Should I leave well enough alone as this is a functional on off button? Volume control on the steering wheel works, but if i could make this work as well I would like to do that. Thanks!
I wonder if that control even has contacts of the sort deoxit would help with. The mouse I'm using right now has a scroll wheel that's all optical. Take the mouse apart and there's no electrical connection to the wheel. It just has a pattern of fine lines on it and there's an LED and a photosensor looking at it to see the lines move. The most I've ever had to do when it starts scrolling strangely is open it up and blow some lint off the optical pattern.
That’s a good point. I did read that trying to blast it with some compressed air might be a good First step. The button itself was covered with sticky grime. Would not be surprised if some dirt got behind the button I see mention that it is probably a rotary encoder, with definition below... A rotary encoder is considered an electromechanical device that primarily uses optical technology to convert rotational motion into electrical signals, meaning it is primarily "optical" in its sensing mechanism, but the output is an electrical signal; hence, it is classified as both electrical and optical depending on the context. So the operation of the moving (rotating) knob may be optical like you suggested. so maybe it just needs to be shot with some compressed air?? Would still be better with that button off.
