Hybrid battery replacement options 2012 C 4

    I think it’s time. Pictures show the codes. I cleared the code 6 months ago but this morning it popped up again. 130k miles.

    pictures attached.

    local dealer quoted me $2500 + $1100 labor, 1 year warranty (new)

    Green bean- $2300 4 year warranty new cells; my concern is their recent reviews/service seems to go downhill since acquired by ikq corporation.

    Prius Kings - $2000 5 year warranty, $2700 lifetime; concern is if there’s an issue I either have to tow the car in or pay a fee for a tech to come to me.

    what do you recommend?

    I called 4 in my area. This was the cheapest.

    When ours goes, it'll be a Toyota battery from the dealer. I don't want to screw around with anything less than a new Toyota battery.

    Not sure whether I'll pay them to install it, pay somebody else to install it or just do it myself. That part remains in question.

    I recommend that you look at the freeze frame data for the P0A80 code. It will tell you the voltages of all the battery blocks when the code was triggered. What is the voltage difference between the highest battery block and the lowest battery block?

    The screenshot of Dr Prius app shows a Delta SOC of 46%, which is very bad. This is telling you the battery blocks SOC are not balanced to each other. A healthy battery pack would have a Delta SOC of 0%. I would use a grid charger to top balance the battery pack. This will help to reduce the Delta SOC back down to 0%. How long it would remain balanced is the big question. If one of the 20 battery modules has gone bad, a top balance using the grid charger will not help fix your problem. The bad module or entire battery pack would need to be replaced.

    I just added two sentences to end of my post #5.

    You need to take screenshots of the Dr Prius app when you are driving the car during hard acceleration and large regenerative braking (high current usage).

    I’m heading to the dealership now. If the total price is what they quote me over the phone ($2500+$1100) I’ll just sign and get it over with.

    i live in an apartment in NYC. Don’t have access to a driveway etc. For the reasons I mentioned in the OP, I’ll just bite the bullet I think. All the other dealers are $300-$500 more expensive.

    thank you. The last thing I need is the wife and kids get stranded somewhere in 6 months… I won’t hear the end of it

    I’m not sure if these answer the request but I tried.

    dealership can take the car for a $185 diagnostic on Monday and go from there. At least I have the weekend to think about options.

    The only thing that the dealership will do for the $185 diagnostic is connect Techstream and check for trouble codes. Do not clear the trouble codes. They will see the P0A80 code and tell you that the hybrid battery needs to be replaced.

    To check the condition of the hybrid battery blocks, you need 50 amps or higher during charge and discharge. The screenshots that you provided only show about 12 amps of current flow.

    thank you. I have no idea how to produce those higher voltages. Does it matter though? I’m thinking after 13 years and 130k miles it might have just run its course.

    I didn’t clear the codes.

    Is Green Bean still recommended around here by the experts?

    Since you are taking the car into the dealership on Monday, I would not try to diagnose it yourself. Wait to see what the dealership says.

    I've the option of taking it to the dealership. I haven't ruled out calling Green Bean. I have their quote. Just need to pick up the phone and pay to get the battery shipped lol.

    So yeah, is GB still recommended?
