Are there mods to relocate the dash mounted shifter? On the previous, and post, generations the shifter is located near the arm rest. We have a strong resistance to the shifter being up by the dash. There were mods for the shifter that was in the armrest, such as push button vs stick. Anyone know of a mod to relocate the shifter of the dash?
One you buy a push button shifter you can put it anywhere you want... I think best place for it is on the dash where it's not near your legs... Not sure why you'd want it so close to your knee? Maybe you're just really short and that's not a problem?
How long would the harnessing wires be if you wanted to move it back closer to the arrest. Entire point is to NOT have to reach up for every shift...shifter by the arm reset has been best.
Confident if following a tutorial...I'd need a long wire harness that I could snake under the molding and locate the shifter near the arm rest. BUT, don't want to get ahead of myself as we don't have the car yet...and some of the switch mods are crazy expensive.
The small dash mounted shifter is one of my best liked things on a gen 2, and now on a gen 4 prime. I can’t see what’s wrong with it.
i've always found that the things i was concerned about with a new car weren't worth the effort, and you get used to them
Shifting gears all the time (often in/out of neutral....handy to have it at the fingertips of arm resting on the armrest rather than always reaching up to shift. We each have out own styles. No point in exploring deeper until I actually have a car that has that shifter. :-D
The best location for the shifter has to be the generation 3 Prius v. To make it even better, I modified mine by bending the shaft so that the top of the knob is vertical instead of horizontal.
Here are two more. The first one is made from a nut from the ISS, with a PEEK (polyethylethylketone) machined adapter and a TRD emblem. This second one is made from a titanium bolt left over from the International Space Station (ISS).
Wow! Nicely done and looks OEM. I laugh because my wife and I are forever hitting the Park button on our Gen4 for the Power button. The location of park is more natural and intuitive (to us) than where Toyota placed.
The vertical shifter is more ergonomic than one that stick out horizontally. It pulls down or flips upward naturally like the old style floor shifter. Aĺ I did was to fully remove the shifter, clamp the thread shifter in a vise with soft aluminum Jaws and slowly bend the shaft by gripping the shifter body. No heat was required. It was just that simple.
Here's another version made from rare Dymondwood. Dymondwood has not been available after the Rutland plant burned down 10 years ago.
When its dark and dome light is off the park button does sort of disappear as it’s black in black on my G4. I have a harder time with the three ev buttons which are also black. It may take some practice by feel, because I always have to look where ev/hv button is. I use it a lot on trips. Like if there is a traffic jam, I find the ev button to keep in battery mode.
