I got mu PP two months ago and haven't used much gasoline b/c I'm charging it often. I've heard that gasoline has a "shelf life" so I'm wondering how long I can go before I should be adding fresh gas? Should I run on gas until the tank is nearly empty and then get fresh gas every couple of months? Just wondering what more experienced owners do.
the gen4 manual stated nine months to a year, but I wouldn't do that since oil changes are supposedly done annually at a minimum too. That being said, I would run the car in HV mode for one week every month. that way your burning through your gas and lubricating the mechanical bits of your motor. that also burns out gas & moisture collecting within your engine oil and prevents internal rust formation. Hope this helps.....
Thanks very much. I have been running the EV down so the engine runs bc I figured it’s good to run it once in a while, as you’ve stated. It’s a new concept for me, not using gas.
I routinely put half a tank of 6-12 month old gas in my last car (an ICE Toyota) when it was time to rotate my gas cans, and never had any negative consequences. I won't do that with this car, as the gas would then sit around for an additional 6 months plus! If you're going to gas up once a year, it may be better to do it in the winter so you get winter-blend gas. Fuel stabilizer will help keep the water away from the ethanol, too.
In addition to what I've stated earlier; If the engine is still running once you stopped the car. Best practices is to wait for the ECU to shut down the motor. Shouldn't be more than a few minutes, as the ECU is completing the engine warmup cycle. That's when the engine oil is hot enough to evaporate excess fuel and moisture out of your oil. You don't have to do this all the time, but it's better to let your engine warm all the way up. Again, best practices... YMMV..
