Have a Sony xav-3600 and SWC worked fine, but now they act like there all depressed. Turn radio on, turn up volume, it automatically goes down!

I can buy the rubber covers but has anybody had this happen, and what dit it turn out to be?

The original headunit does have a switch-status diagnostic screen where you can see just what buttons it thinks are pushed and when, and that can help a lot in tracking down what's going on in a situation like this. Of course I know nothing about the aftermarket unit you've got, but maybe it has a similar screen you can pull up some way.

Original unit did not have (or did not reveal it self re) status of buttons pushed.

I can't imagine the clock spring went bad (2012 Prius with 90k miles) but it is 12/13 years old. Do they get gunked up or broken at that age/mileage?

Doesn't look too bad to change, I will order one and get to it!

Thanks, hopefully this will fix it and I report back.

When I think of the gen 3 headunits, I think of the touchscreen ones, which have a pretty extensive selection of diagnostic screens once you know the magic gestures to get into them.

But I tend to forget that gen 3 also had non-nav headunits with a couple lines of text display instead of a whole screen.

I believe those also have diagnostic modes that are described in the repair manual, but much more terse and cryptic and I never memorized how to enter and use them.

But I guess the most interesting question right now is, does your aftermarket head unit have any such screens?

Got a clockspring, replaced it and the dash lit up upon repowering. Now I got one from ebay for under 20 bucks and it was missing an electrical connection, determined missing electric and additional part to be removable unit on original, so i removed it and placed it on the ebay unit. Reassembly went fine but the dash lit up and wouldn't shift, just said put it in Park.

So took it back apart and removed the removable part, retimed the original clockspring, installed removable part back on reassembled steering wheel et al and car works! Whew. I think I am going to find an original part and try again.

I assume that removable part is the Steering wheel angle sensor (might not be correct name).

    Comments etc?

If you have access to an obd2 scan tool, the more advanced ones have steering angle sensor (SAS) adjustment available if I recall correctly.

    SM-G781V ?

Yeah, the steering angle sensor snaps on to the clock spring. I had to replace mine because the horn wasn't working on my 2011 Gen 3 at around 120K.

A lot of those ebay ones are junk, but I didn't want to pay the full $$$ for a new Toyota one. I got the middle of the road one. Mainly, I was just looking to diagnose why my horn didn't work. When it did, along with everything else, I just left the aftermarket one in and it's worked fine ever since.

I just made sure the car was pointed straight before I took the steering wheel and angle sensor out, then made sure to keep everything straight before putting it all back together too. I didn't have any troubles with being off that way.

Got a Clockspring and a steering angle sensor as "one" from an Ebay seller. Put that one in with the negative disconnected from the 12 volt. Put it back together (boy it is simpler and quicker after doing it 3 times) hooked up the negative and turned the car on. Dash lights lit up! But I turned the car off and back on and the dash was fine (wonder if this was my problem the first time?).

Any way no steering wheel controls at all, the Sony has the ability to learn your SWC and it doesn't find mine, also the right hand side (Disp, etc) doesn't work either. Also having trouble making the reverse camera (add on) work.

Used 21,22 and 23 for the left hand side, used 2 for Reverse in.
Grounded all pinks to the Radio (figuring ground connects through negative)
