Prii had spares until at least the gen 3. Full size went away in most cars before that as tires got better, and flats less common.

Agree on the looks. We had a Super Beetle when I was a kid. There is a BEV that looks just like the old Beetle, but one or two size class es bigger. We'll never get it.

At the rate prices are going, I might have to switch to a VW Beetle for my next car. I wish there were more new econo models and cheaper used cars. If Toyota sold the Yaris here for under $20k, I might be interested. I'm not sure I want a 5-year-old Corolla with 100k miles on it for the same price.

My Prius currently needs another engine because the cylinders are gouged and it is not rebuildable. On a VW Beetle it would have been a $200 cylinder/piston set.

On the other hand, the Prius got 200,000 miles on it before needing this. A Beetle might have needed a rebuild at half that at best.

 

Along with rural car dealers with service and parts departments. When I returned from Okinawa, I took 10 days to rebuild my 1500 cc engine using parts ordered from JC Witney and the local VW dealer handling the crank and head rebuild. Coffeyville KS has a lot of used car lots and VW was gone by the time I left the Marines.
