I bought used keyfobs for a gen2 (09) prius, not realizing that they are married to the vehicle to infamous chicken dance won't work. I understand that they can be "re-virginized" but I don't know how (I don't have techstream) or where to get it done. Does anyone know of a reputable business where I can get this done? I live in central IL, so I might have to send them off to get them done.

Are there any pitfalls in doing this? When I got this prius the seller only had one key fob. I tried an aftermarket keyfob, but it was pretty much crap. Given this I am assuming that this prius has only had 3, possibly 4, key fobs married to it.

    Oh, these are silverback fobs.

    TIA.

To revirginize a gen 2 Prius key fob requires replacing the the transponder chip with a new one. It's black plastic with one side that tapered. The transponder chip is pressed into the case. It is often not transfered to the new replacement case. This is very bad. To verify that the transponder chip is in the fob and paired to car. Insert the keyfob into the dash. The immobilizer light should go out immediately and stay out. The keyfob uses 4D69 transponder chip. This chip is available from professional locksmith supplier.

    Hi JeffAnd…

Thanks for the response. I ended up buying a Techstream cable off Amazon and recoding it that way. It’s been about two years and it’s still working fine.
