I cynically doubt this has anything to do with fentanyl. That was just the BS excuse to 'justify' an economic invasion. If anyone were serious about it, they'd do something about demand. If you don't want something in your country, don't buy it.

The tariffs might be on hold for now...'let's meet next month, and I'll decide then if I'm going to beat you up again'...but the damage to the relationship is permanent. Canadians, including all levels of government, are actively looking for purchasing options that are not American, and they're booing the American national anthem at hockey games. Whatever the evil cabal of wannabe Fuhrers thinks they want, you can't pull a punch like that and expect nothing to happen.

The fentanyl thing is real enough but every now and again some of our northern neighbors say the same thing about OUR firearms used in all of those violent crimes that aren't supposed to be happening up there.

I'm afraid that the only lasting effect from this nontroversy will from Long TDS.....a relatively new dampanic that began August 8, 2022.

 

I think he revealed his true reason for proposing tariffs when he complained about the US "subsidizing" Canada for $100B, right after he said they need to secure the border. In his eyes, any trade deficit must be the result of unfair trade practices rather than a desire on the part of American businesses and consumers to get a good product at a fair price. I can certainly understand how governments need to protect their industries from unfair competition when the foreign entity is actually "dumping" their product to drive domestic producers out of business, but restricting trade under other circumstances will only hurt your own businesses and consumers in the long run, although you may be able to prop up some of your less efficient producers in the short run. Edit: I forgot to add that I believe Trump is coming up with the $100B number by only considering the "goods" deficit and not including "services", where the US has a trade surplus with Canada.
