Bone up on head gasket replacement, just in case.

Doesn't seem to be possible to replace just that white plastic collar that broke. :(

I am fine with the washer remedy as long as it will hold.

For give me not sure whaht you ment by "Bone up"
can you elaborate on your Bone up statement. Did you mean learn as much as I can about it ?
Or did you mean that I should get it replaced just in case?

Is repacing the Head Gasket myself in the driveway a bad idea?

Bone up is canadian for study the process before doing it if and when needed.

Coolant does not normally go down even if not touched for years. So Mendel is preparing you if the worse happens and it rattles again.

A borescope test is the right thing to do; an egr does not cause rattling. It can cause stumbling accompanied by an egr code caused by the egr sticking open at low rpm's and startup. A egr test is run almost every drive time and will code if the egr is either sticking open or clogged completely.

It's ok and some mobile guys do exactly that. But if you don't have experience it can be several days worth of work. Usually a rebuilt of the head by a machine shop is recommended. Doing it in the car (instead of pulling the engine) makes experience even more valuable as doing the timing chain can be tricky and has caused redos by some. Knowing the scope of the problem is sometimes difficult. If it burns oil now it will burn oil later.

Do you have a garage? Even if it would mean some temporary removal of stored items, that'd be preferable for comfort, convenience.

Agreed on definition, but origin might be US:

    Partial quote:

"Bone up" appears to have developed from the simpler verb form "bone," as J.E. Lighter, Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, reports. Several early instances of bone or boning in this sense are recorded from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, starting in 1859. The earliest match for "bone up" (or rather "boning up") is from 1877, from the University of Michigan.

$2,000 if they guarantee and rebuild the head.

$4,000 if they install a Hybridpit Gold rebuilt engine with new pistons and rings.

the saga continues.. After cleaning egr cooler, egr valve, intake manifold and installing the oil catch can. All codes were clear and car seemed to be operating normal...
My daughter drove the car for a week probably 200 miles and today we she got a CEL and the code was P0441 and auto parts store recomended replacing the EVAP canister Purge control valve.
Anyone think it could have something to do with the Oil Catch Can hose connections or something else before throwing parts at it?

    Thank you
    Garry

Maybe something disconnected at the item id'd in the linked diagram as 17650? It bolts to driver's side of intake manifold.

Make sure the hose 23827A in the diagram linked in post #31 is connected correctly.

Sometimes people forget to put disconnected hoses back in place.
