2010 Head Gasket Replacement - fsm, recommended parts, and tips?

    What is the toyota part number for this head gasket kit ?? I'm about to replace my head gasket. Not trying to thousands of dollars for this job lol I'll be replacing hg , and o rings and head bolts . My engine just started shaking during cold starts and I stopped driving it , it never over heated so I don't think there's any damage to the engine .

    I have all the tools and will use the video as a guide. Anything else I should know before starting?

    You'll want to check the valves for leaking. Just spray wd40 into each valve and wait
    10 minutes or so then carefully lift the head and see if there are any leaking.
    If any are, you should seat them in. You'll need a SMALL valve spring removal tool.

    And you'll replace the valve guide seals while you're at it.

    This TSB, ostensibly for piston ring replacement, has all the part numbers you might need, including the gasket kit, head bolts, and revised pistons/rings if you go there.

    This is a tough call on these open deck engines there's a lot to be sussed out and dealt with possibly so if you're just slapping on a head gasket and fooling around with the timing and slapping it back together the odds are way down there that this is not going to generally go well but there are a few people that have so shoot your best shot I guess not the smartest thing to be doing on these modular open deck engines these are kind of built-like if you will the North Star Cadillac motors lots of sections and pieces not the best way to go but probably the best for the manufacturer.

    I agree with Tom. Almost all dealers and pro mechanics with experience on these engines won't do a simple head gasket job alone. They will recommend professionally rebuilt engines or maybe a low mile used JDM engine if you push hard enough. The rebuilt option is generally the only one with a guarantee due to comeback percentages on the other options.

    Part of the reason is you end up with the old low tension rings and pistons. Sometimes slightly bent connecting rods or block/head warping cause another failure.

    Some have had success with hg only - but if you want to keep it another 100k miles or more, most shops with a reputation to protect recommend rebuilt.
