Welcome to PriusChat Jim.

The brightness of the backlights for the the steering wheel buttons are not adjustable.

There is a world of info on PriusChat and can be found with the "search" feature.
Don't feel bad, but you aren't the first to ask about the lights. :)

I also had this issue when we first picked up the Prius 2 months ago, now I'm used to it and can easily see the symbols on the steering wheel buttons with a quick glance. Give it some time, it should improve for you also as you get more comfortable with the layout.

The lights are adjustable, just not by you, unless you want to buy the Prius tool from Toyota. When you take the car to a dealer they can adjust the brightness of steering wheel and the window control lights.

I thought it wasn't adjustable at all, not even by the dealers.

OK, where is one of our resident Prius Techs to break the tie?
Are they adjustable or not?

Wow!! thats the first post I read (even with another thread on the main forum on this exact same topic now) thats ever said the wheel lights are adjustable. Galaxee would be the deciding judge on this one I contend as her husband is the head prius tech at the toyota dealer in durham, n.c.

Galaxee, can we have a verdict please??????

I'm due for my first oil change next week, and I plan to ask the dealer to increase the brightness of the lights if possible.

There's a document on one of the Yahoo Prius groups that describes all the dealer-settable options for the car. One of them in the lighting category is called "SENSITIVITY", which looks like maybe it's the setting for the dash/wheel lights. But I'm not sure. Here's the description from the document:

NAME: SENSITIVITY

    DESCRIPTION: (Turn ON luminous intensity)
To adjust the sensitivity of the lighting illumination.

    DEFAULT: NORMAL

    SETTINGS: LIGHT2/LIGHT1/NORMAL/DARK1/DARK 2

I'm going to ask my dealer about this next week; I'll let you guys know if they're able to do it!

Are you sure it's not for the auto headlight sensitivity?

I agree, I really don't think thats for the wheel lights. However, it certainly won't hurt to ask the dealer. If you find out, please let us know, as I'm sure there are lots of folks who would like their wheel lights brighter..... :D

    Good Luck!!

I called my dealer yesterday, and also wrote an email. Got the same response from both- they are not able to adjust the steering lighting. While I guess nothing is definitive unless the engineers who created the car say so, I was disappointed as it sounded from the posts above that it might have been possible.

I just had my first oil change on Friday, and the dealer was unable to brighten the lights. So it seems it may not be possible.

They did say they were going to call their regional tech center and ask about it, and let me know this week. They mentioned something about a newer scan tool that they don't have yet, so maybe there's still hope. I'll post again if I find out any new info.
