I just picked up a 2010 Prius with 150k miles on it from FB marketplace.

Currently have it in my shop with the dash torn apart and just swapped out the capacitor on the dash panel. I plan to also do the general maintenance one expects on a high mileage car, plugs, air filters, transmission drain and fill, check on the brakes, and rotate the tires.

My question is, since I have no idea what the previous owner did, are there any maintenance items specific to Gen2s that I should also be looking out for? This is my first Prius, but I have a friend with one he got with over 200k that I'll also be helping out.

I'm sure there are previous threads concerning this, but a quick search didn't show up with anything.

    Thank you

2010 is gen 3. This is gen 2 forum. I guess you have to clean the EGR system also in gen 3.

Generally all fluids, filters, hybrid fan and its filter etc. Also check suspension, axles, rubber parts like radiator hoses..

I misspoke on the year, it's an 08. I've been looking at so many of the things on FB Marketplace that I got them confused.

Thank you, though, the fans and filters were something I'd have overlooked.

For the EGR is that something I should consider fixing preemptively? Or just wait and see if it develops the issue?

Attached are spreadsheet and pdf format summaries of the Toyota USA maintenance schedules, per the "Warranty and Maintenance Booklet". PDF format of that booklet is available online at Toyota Tech Info website (under the "manuals" tabl), but it only goes to 12 years or 120K miles, and is in event-by-event format, making it impossible to see the patterns. The attachments are all cobbled by me, so take with a grain of salt. I've tried to summarize everything Toyota USA says, albeit tightened up a bit.

In addition to the schedule, not mentioned by Toyota USA, these are also worthwhile:

    1. Full cleaning of the EGR system. This should ideally be done every 50K miles max. It's the only way to keep it functioning properly, as it rolled off the factory floor, due to inevitable carbon build-up. Toyota hasn't really acknowledged the design shortcoming, at least not publically. There complete redesign of the system for 4th gen is telling, though. Left long enough, the head gaskets start failing, very common in gen 3.

    2. Brake fluid change. Toyota Canada says every 3 years or 48k kms. Toyota USA says nothing.

    3. Transaxle fluid change. At least one.

More info on all of the above in in my signature. On a phone turn it landscape to see signatures.

Unfortunately... you might have missed my correction, and I cannot see an obvious way to edit my post on mobile (which seems...odd). I misspoke on the year. I have an 08. I specifically am avoiding Gen3s due to the head gasket issue.

I am sure that the maintenance information will be relatively the same and it is very much appreciated.

Editing a post can be done for some hours (less than 24 hours) from the time you post. After that, you can use the report button to request your edit. There are reasons why it is that way but I won't go into that.

BTW, you should change your profile from 2010 to 2008, too.
