    Hi there,

I have a 2012 V that needs a new catalytic converter. There's some aftermarket available in eBay at an affordable price, below U$100 inclusive of shipping , with two sizes, 620mm and 580mm. I emailed the seller to confirm the size, and they asked for my VIN where they then confirmed that the ones they're selling are not compatible, and that I need p/n 1741037551.

Further research shows the price of this part is over $1,000, more line closer to 2k, and the original Toyota part is ~3.5k.

Is there a way to modify the aftermarket part to fit my car? This is a high mileage car, and I just got the head gasket done, but don't want to sink any more money at this.

Furthermore, how can the prices be that far apart? How different can they be, the chemical component couldn't be that different from the original one. I just need a little more life with this 2012 I have, until I can fully transition to another hybrid or perhaps an ev. TIA

The factory is two cats and an elaborate exhaust heat recirculating system designed to speed up coolant warm up time.

The oem assembly above is bolt on.

The recirc part is different on a v which makes the oem v assembly more expensive than a hatchback. The oem cats have more precious metals than aftermarket and will last a lifetime without the all to common gen3 oil burning.

A far less expensive option is a Walker 16649 car assembly without the recirc system. It is a dual cat direct fit for the tight space available.

You keep the stock Exhaust Heat Recirc by cutting off the two oem cats. Walker claims their cat assembly can clamp on to the remaining Recirc pipe but most of us would have a muffler or mechanic shop do the work including welding on the cut part for a couple hundred. Total cost might be $600. These cats have less precious metals but keep the check engine off for three or more years.

It depends if you are in a C.A.R.B. state. You give no location.

Come back with your location first.

Thanks all for the replies, and @rjparker, thanks for the detailed explanation. I think this will give more life to my V. I am a longtime lurker here, do my research here most of the time when a problem comes up to find the answers, barely posting, but you guys always come up with very helpful suggestions. Sooo thankful for this site. Toyota should be thankful too, to whoever built this website and hosts the server. I've owned the 2001, 2004, 2006 (all retired now at very high mileage) and two 2012 V's, one is still kicking around. And I couldn't have had the confidence to own them in their high mileage years without the help of this site. Again, kudos to all the experienced and knowledgeable people too, who are here, ready to lend their expertise when needed.
