I'm a little desperate for help after going through several options, but just wanted to reach out to see if anyone here can give me some advice on what I can do at this point.

Earlier this year, my wife and I noticed the temperature light was going off on our 2017 Toyota Prius. We brought it to our dealer and they mentioned that a TSB had been issued back in 2019 for a coolant pipe issue, where the coolant was being burned up by the engine. We were told that an ETA for this pipe was unknown. I wish we fought for a courtesy car in the mean time, because 2 months later, when we were driving on the highway our car's warning system went off and told us to pull over. We had to tow our car to a nearby dealer, where they informed us that the engine had failed. When we towed it to our home service dealer, they did a detailed look at the engine and the damage was so catastrophic that the only option was to get the engine replaced. The kicker is that our extended warranty had expired 3 months prior, so we're not going to get this covered.

For the past 3 months, I've been going back with the dealer and Toyota Corporate about this, and I'm getting no where. I'm extremely annoyed by the fact that this was a known issue since 2019, but nothing was done to address this until our engine (which has less than 100,000km on it) overheated on us while out of warranty.

Like I said, I'm a little desperate right now as to what me and my wife can do. I know the warranty issue is going to work against us, but is there something we can do or are we shit out of luck? A used engine will run us about $8000 by Toyota doing the repairs, and I think that's a little insane given that I feel like they could have done something earlier. We've had this car serviced every year so I'm not sure why this issue would not be addressed since then. Thanks in advance.

Because the coolant leak issue is not addressed during normal scheduled service. It is something that is preceded by low engine coolant (coolant level dropping), no or poor heat in the cabin (due to low coolant), sweet smelling white smoke from the tailpipe (from coolant burning off in the exhaust pipe) and engine high temperature light (due to low coolant). If all these symptoms are overlooked or missed, then you end up with an engine overheat and seized engine.

It's too bad you just signed up on PriusChat yesterday, or maybe you would have noticed the threads on engine coolant leaks a long time ago.

Only if they do not get driven away by the ads. i have been a member since before I bought a 2017 Prius but, until recently, I was unaware of this issue. I only came back here after the Prius was totaled in an accident & I started looking for a replacement.

Should'a-could'a-would'a situations happen in life. That's the way we learn things we don't easily forget.

It's an unfortunate situation and I don't know of any place in Canada I could recommend for an engine replacement. GasketMasters has a good reputation in the lower 48 and I have recommended them to others in a similar situation to the one you're experiencing as an alternative to the typical stealership service pricing models. Now you got first hand experience on the Dealership service business model and why there are so many of us that do our own maintenance and repairs here at priuschat.
Like this heat exchanger bypass that might have helped you when you got your first oveheat issue and the dealer either couldn't get the replacement part(s) to fix your overheat issue or didn't want to have to do the paperwork for the possibly covered ( at that time ) repair.

This “shortage” could have been perpetuated by Toyota, coupled with “ignorance” of the TSB by dealerships. In both cases it lines somebody’s pocket.

You can block ads on PriusChat with this "tool", Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File. It replaces the hosts file, so you need to be comfortable with "command line" programming to install it. Well, actually I can't say for sure if you need the command line for Windows, but definitely for Mac OS. Since it replaces the hosts file, it blocks ads for anything you browse to since all internet requests go through the hosts file to get resolved.

I know i CAn but should not need to. I was around here before this mess was foisted on us. It is just easier to go elsewhere, depriving them of any ad revenue.

I very occasionally access the site without an ad blocker, and it’s dismaying. PriusChat single-handedly motivated me to look into ad-blocking software.

Sorry to hear about this, you should probably search for an independent Toyota/Prius shop to replace the engine. They can usually get the job done for half the cost.

Re: extended warranty - you may not have been covered anyway. Not all extended warranties are comprehensive. A gentleman in Alaska under similar circumstances seized his engine too. When the dealership reported the engine seizure was due to lack of coolant - it voided that warranty. Insurance company determined the slow leak was preventable, if user simply opened the hood and looked at the coolant level before driving it - therefore it was operator abuse. I think that posting was about a year ago.

sorry again to hear about your mishap...
