Hey all, so I figured I'd get a jump on getting the car cleaned up in the engine area. I know for a fact that I'm gonna clean the maf sensor (might be the only person who's done it on this car I'm sure). Also looking at upgrading the spark plugs. Maybe the egr valve? I know for a fact that the hybrid battery modules need to be replaced and that will happen, its just a matter of when (currently sitting at approx 45 mpg between fill ups). I'm also gonna order a replacement engine and cabin air filter.

Aside from all this, any other ideas?

For those who don't know, I currently have a 2013 Prius with just over 172k miles.

So the order is, clean up the engine, upgrade spark plugs then toss out the engine whrh new plugs in it? I was thinking, swap in engine, clean it then put new plugs in.

@Grit just cus he was elephant hunting in his pajamas, lol.
How long have you had it?

    Recent acquisition, explained here:

A couple of issues | PriusChat

Starting another thread is not helpful, but anyway:

Any 3rd Gen for sale with those miles is likely being ditched, has long neglected EGR system cleaning, and failing head gasket. The latter maybe masked by a stop-leak “product”.

I’d just do the minimum to keep it roadworthy for now, keep an eye on engine oil and engine coolant levels.

Do you have a garage/carport or level driveway? Floor jack, safety stands, ramps, tools?

Why are you replacing the engine? Because you have money to burn?
    Same with the hybrid battery?
Wouldn't it be easier to replace the whole car?

    It's just the wording:
    Would be better as:
I'm also gonna order a replacement engine filter and cabin air filter.

I guess you need more than artificial intelligence at your disposal to confuse that statement. My brain had to read it twice to understand the subsequent questions. Even then I figured Grit was going for humor as is his style.

Yes even I caught the engine filter not the engine but you might as well go ahead and get ready if this is a real keeper and you think that and everything is up to snuff inside and outside the car for you to keep it then yeah you might want to round yourself up an engine because you will need it probably in much shorter order than you think your next post could be the cry with this model it is that quick so hopefully you have other modes of transportation while you sort out all of the things you're going to think you want to do or what have you and you're ready as long as you have another vehicle or another way to get to work without inconveniencing too many people You're in good shape You have all the time in the world The car still won't be a keeper but maybe you can get whatever money in it you've got in it out of it if that's how you look at these things but this is not a car you want to stay with You might think you do right now but it's not the one I don't think any of these cars moving forward are going to be the one I'm waiting to see before I die if Toyota ever does that again I don't think they'll ever be or what a feeling again That's long gone times really changed. If anything Toyota has turned just like their brethren Chevrolet people that they work very close with and nummi plant and all of that. The next major changes in manufacturing and everything moving forward will not be for the people they will be for industry notice how everything is planned obsolescence now they need you buying a new car every 3 to 5 years. Point blank they do not want to make their namesake by building things that are quality products that last a long time there's no money in that as you well know

Best advice so far. Don't spend much until you know if writing "order a replacement engine" was not actually psychic premonition.

I doubt they actually intended to make a lemon with third gen, more likely trying to eke out a few more tenths of a mpg, so in went the low-tension piston rings and freshly-minted EGR system, and testing be damned.

I actually loved all of the 30 or so Toyotas that I owned from the very late '60s first KE Corollas all the way up until well 2008 or nine The generation 3 started the trend that all manufactures today are following even the good ones The people I used to get other quality products from have fallen to the same level of I don't even know what it is anymore disgrace whatever you want to call it people will accept cheap junk and so that's what they shoot for I guess I really don't know but I'm talking it's not even worth it to go any further here but I'm talking about name products gear that was once very high quality good stuff now their name is attached to pure garbage because that's the only way they can sell a lot and when you keep trying to pay off more stockholders or whatever you've got to come up with money not a quality product

Hey all I would like to apologize for not responding sooner. Also thanks for pointing out the sentence flaw about the engine. Yes, I did actually MEAN to say engine air filter, not the engine itself. There is no real big issues with the engine itself, so I do apologize for the confusion there. But yes, I am open to other things that I can clean up. Also since bisco said to replace the spark plugs with ones from a dealer, I figured I would avoid that step and just go straight to Rockauto since its the same spark plugs, but yet I'm not gonna get ripped off just because they want extra profit for the exact SAME profit.

Do check with dealership parts department for cost of plugs. They're usually higher for me (compared to a local automotive specialty shop), but when I was shopping plugs (for our '10) the dealership was a couple of dollars cheaper per plug. And no shipping charge of course.

mmmmmmmm...... be careful with rock auto. They are NOT the same.
Others have reported they have received counterfeit plugs, and other parts from them.

Yes, they do cost more from the dealer, but, it's extremely doubtful you'll get counterfeit
    parts from a dealer.
I've been using Bosch from autozone and have had no issues with them.

Hey all, so I just got the message 'maintenance required soon' on the dash. While I do know this means to do an oil change in the near future, what I don't know is exactly how long to wait before performing the oil change? However, I did read the article regarding the steps in terms of doing the oil change, so I'll definitely look into finding the parts, but I'm a little worried about trying to use the ramps that we have for trying to lift up the car. I'll be testing that tomorrow. If the tires can't reach the ramps, then it won't be an issue to lift up the car so that I can get underneath.

Now going back to the whole spark plugs thing. I'll talk to the local dealership to ensure that the parts match up along with finding out how much that they'll charge for the spark plugs. However, I've ordered spark plugs from Rockauto in the past without any issues.

The maintenance required light gives you 500 miles before the 5,000 mile interval is reached. If you drive like we do that may be one week.

The thick manual in the glovebox is your friend. It is also available at toyota.com for your phone or computer and is searchable, has an index and hot links.

If the spark plugs were replaced once already with oem, you don't need new ones. There are no upgrades no matter what marketing ads drill into you. The oem will last 150k or more easily even when your old gen3 is burning a quart every thousand miles. Plugs are the least of your potential problems.

Counterfeit plugs in very good counterfeit packaging are the concern when buying from most online sellers of "genuine" Oem parts. Often the packages have subtle tells but someone knowledgeable has to point them out.
