I went to Ace Hardware and made a copy of the key shank, hoping that if the chip key is inside the car it would work, it doesn't. It turns, and the system powers up, but doesn't go to READY. So if it's not a proximity sensor, how does the immobilizer sense the original key?

I am not against new technology, but I am against paying $100 for a chip key vs $3 for a normal key. What do I do?

I am sure this has been covered before, but I can't figure out how to search this particular forum, sorry.

i'm not familiar with the c key options. if you use it like a regular key, perhaps the chip has to be close to the key slot?

That's correct, I was able to start the car by holding the fob close. I watched a few videos, the circle around the key cylinder is an antenna. All it takes, is the chip to be within that antenna range to disable immobilizer.

that's how you start the keyless ones when the battery dies. too bad you can't figure a way to attach it to the new key.
