Anyone know if I can replace the ABS/speed sensor bolt on the hub knuckle? The part of the ABS sensor that connects to the hub knuckle via the bolt is broken, but I can replace that. But the bolt has also been cut. My guess is a cowboy did it as the nut had seized. Other than replacing the whole knuckle, can I replace just the bolt, or is it welded to the knuckle?
Well if somebody cut the bolt or broke the boat then you have a piece in the hub which is that big aluminum thing that has houses to bearing. Then you've either got to center punch that and try to drill it out I use backwards drill bits so that if they catch it might grab what's left of it and run it right out with the drill bit if not it puts a hole in it generally you're okay then you can chase the threads with a thread chasing tool apply a new sensor grease up a little bolt I think it's 6 mm and apply it until it just touches the plastic of the sensor no reason to squeeze on it very tight or anything this is not going to work its way loose believe me.
I’ll try get it out using a bolt extractor. I’ve ordered a new ABS sensor too. Fingers crossed all goes well! A M6 20mm should fit, right?
Sounds about right I don't use screw extractors You should order left hand drill bits instead of spinning to the right they spin backwards when you stick it in the bolt to start drilling it spins backwards and if the drill bit catches the piece you're trying to remove just right it will catch it and spin it right out because the drill bit is spinning to the left Lefty loosey righty tighty If you drill to the right you're tightening the bolt or what's left of the threads if you're turning to the left you are naturally trying to loosen and remove what's left of the threads does that make sense
Yes, makes sense. I’ve watched some videos on YouTube and seen how they do it. Rarely it removes with the bit itself, more often it removes with the bolt extractor. I’ll try WD40 and a spanner first. There is some of the bolt still protruding from where it’s screwed into. If that fails, it’s the above method of reverse bits and extractors.
We tried and tried but the snapped bolt won’t come out. Ended up replacing the whole knuckle, which came with the ABS sensor, which can be removed and its bolt can also be removed. Unfortunately it came with a dud wheel bearing and ball joint, so those are being replaced as we speak. Fingers crossed all goes well and nothings seized!
Yeah it's probably faster to pick up another whole hub from a junkyard or out of your backyard or whatever I have millions of them here I wouldn't even waste time with extractors or drills or pilot holes or any of that nonsense I just chuck that one right into the metal recycling bin and pick up one off the ground in the shop and put a bearing in it a ball joint on it slap it back on the car and off we go We haven't even wasted an hour.
They’re really hard to find here in the UK. Brand new from dealer it’s >£400. I had to get one delivered from the other side of the UK to me. It’s not far in terms of USA distances, but it is far when comparing in the UK. Thankfully, the new ABS sensor is on, new bearing is also on. No more error lights etc. Ride is great again. Although, sounds like a knock starting in the passenger side now… Service and MOT in a month or so, so that should come to light then.
