Hello again everyone! Been awhile since I have been on the forums. Cars been running smooth since I replaced the head gasket on her, not getting the gas mileage I'd have liked to have seen after cleaning her out but at least there aren't any more issues. I wanted to post the draft guide on replacing the head gasket on one of these engines as I found it completely within the scope of even a novice mechanic with limited workspace. So far all I have completed is about 90% of the steps required to complete the job (Takedown is 100%, Build up is about 80%.) What'd I'd like to add to it is a tools required list at the beginning, spanning from simple socket sizes to Head Bolt sockets, special removal tools (e.g., Harmonic Balancer puller), and other niche tools I used to complete the job that might not have been thought of prior to starting tear down. I've also attached all of the repair manuals I've found related to the job. If you'd like to leave some feedback on the draft, please do so! It would be nice to have a one-stop shop for a job like this since it seems to be a pretty common issue and no single resource contains all of the information needed to do the job. Thank you.
It is but the repair manual is locked behind a paywall and it isn't nearly as user-friendly or accessible to normal people like me who might not have the expertise and know-how to navigate those manuals. That was the goal with this guide.
Came here just to say, THANK YOU. I'm starting today, and will be doing this casually over the next week. Any chance you put together a comprehensive tool list? I'm pretty well experienced with working on vehicles, but any and all extra info is so helpful. (Especially your guide!) Again, thank you so much.
Can someone please give me a hand navigating a couple of tools I'll need? Is the 10mm bihexagonal wrench I need a male or female? I'm having a hard time figuring it out when I Google it. The 12mm Toyota recommended tool is really a 12mm male socket with 12 points with 120 degree angles not actually a triple square even though a triple square can probably work, right? Thanks!
