I have a 2014 Prius C. Battery is prime earth EV..G9280 series. 250k miles. Was driving along, and everything was fine.. stopped in the driveway.. nothing would start.
Smelled sulfur smell.. checked and found 12 V battery was bad.. replaced it. vehicle will still not start and gets the triangle of death alarm on the screen plus check hybrid system stop vehicle alarm. is there any sure way to verify that the hybrid battery is the problem before buying a new expensive one to replace it. I would expect to see codes with my OBD code reader but maybe it’s not new enough. if I get a more expensive one are there any certain number of codes that tell me 100% that the issue is the hybrid battery. it was just an odd scenario that both batteries failed at the same time with the 12 V battery failing catastrophically to some extent with the sulfur smell, indicating significant failure of it.
it seems throughout the four of people are basically telling you that the best deal is to buy a new battery versus a refurbished battery because the refurbish just are not reliable enough. no other work of any kind has ever been done to this car other than oil changes and filter changes.. any input welcome

yes, if you get a prius aware reader, it will give the proper codes for hybrid battery and which modules are out of spec, or the codes will point to whatever else may be the problem.

Where do I get a “Prius aware Reader”
Or is that a generic statement
Basically get a reader that knows what a Prius is?

The cheapest readers out there only know how to ask for fuel injection and ignition codes.

They don't know how to collect data from any other system in the car, and in a Prius there are many other systems worth hearing from- especially the hybrid subsystem.

So when you plug a basic reader into a Prius with hybrid problems, it can report "no problems found" because it wasn't even asking the right question when it scanned the car.

Here's a thread about an excellent Prius-aware reader that is reasonably easy to use and doesn't break the bank.

Be aware that the Autel AP200 now needs at least an Android version 12 phone, if I'm interpreting Autel support correctly.
Mine is still version 11 and Autel support never responded back after I answered their first email response to me about if the AP200 supports our 2017 Prime, which it does, and in that response the person who sent it to me asked me which Android version I use, which I replied Android 11. See the Autel specs for the AP200 list both Android version 11 and 12 in the spec sheet and not in an easy to tell which it supports. You'd have to look at the spec sheet to understand how confusing it is the way they've written about what Android version is compatible with the AP200.

And while we're here, yes, do get a Prius-aware scan tool and find out what code(s) you have, before even assuming this is about the traction battery. The triangle and "check hybrid system" can come on for a couple hundred different reasons. Battery problems are just a fraction of those.
