Our new-to-us 2004 has the HID housings and (I suspect but haven’t confirmed) D2R bulbs. I am considering switching to LED to reduce the frequency of bulb changes. I am open to changing housings if necessary. How does the performance of the LED conversion compare between the two different housing types?

There was a time when LED was only possible with Halogen housings and I'd replace HID housings with the Halogen ones to free people from the ballast problems of HID. But times have change and now you can get LED for the HID housings, which is good because aftermarket halogen housings are not as strong and often get damaged in shipping.

However, I've had these blacked out headlight cases for about 5 years now and I think they look way nicer: For 2006-2009 Toyota Prius Halogen Type Black Headlights Headlamps Left+Right | eBay They probably aren't as bright as most people would like, but maybe with LED bulbs that could be resolved? As for them not being available for 2004-2005, that's just because there's an additional bulb in the 2006-2009, which you could easily wire in.

do you find the HID housings (projectors?) to be brighter than the halogen (reflector) housings, both with LEDs? What is the additional bulb in the 06-09?

HID and Halogen are the same housing... Only difference is the shape of the bulb which means the housings have different shaped bulb mounts.

And in general the HID are designed to be brighter, but how bright is it when your HID ballasts are failing in a short period of time and you have to replace ballasts several times or more over the lifespan of the car?

The HID housings have an actuator that moves a lens to create the high beam. I think that makes it a projector-type headlight (not sure about that). The halogen housing has the high/low built into the bulb (a reflector-type headlight). This is why I wasn’t sure which style is better for led bulbs or if it matters.

In comment #3 above, PriusCamper said that the 06-09 have an additional bulb more than 04-05. I was asking what the extra bulb is. As far as I knew, the 04-05 HID take a D2R and the 06-09 HID take a D4R. I thought that was the only difference.

I am not sure and probably confused All I know of is a 194 for your orange marker and an orange 7443 I think it is for your turn signal and then your H4 halogen high low beam light which in my case is an s1 LED high and low beam with an S4 plug. The HIDs move a shutter over the bulb to create a low and a high beam so the bulb is just on and when you click high beam the shutter lifts up it's a chrome metal thing It lifts up and allows the reflector to see the complete whole wide open lamp assembly and it is of a reflector type projection has nothing to do with a generation two at all in lighting doesn't exist here let somebody installs it and that's a pretty big to do for the most part We don't need to cover that here If it's something that interests you the brand of projector you want is the mini Marimoto. Or very good copies thereof
