There are so many Prius's on the road that I find it strange to think that nobody's made a cool after market MFD/Stereo replacement. Other cars with a much smaller consumer base have big after market upgrades like this, so why not Prius?

This is the center MFD of the Tesla Model S as an example

Has anybody seen something that would replace the whole MFD and stereo console area with a system that would show and control the same things as them? (battery data, navigation, climate, audio, radio, AUX, etc)

most cars take a standard size radio. maybe a bezel is needed to make a clean install. the mfd isn't really part of the radio, so its no big deal to replace the radio in your prius. but since companies only goal is profit, they're not gonna make a replacement for the mfd because they'd sell relatively few of them and there's no profit in that.
you would need to have a custom install made one off. it is possible, but it wouldn't be cheap even if you could diy.

Agreed, making a MFD that also works with the HSD for displaying SOC, Climate controls, and audio would be too narrow a market. Personally, I would NOT buy an aftermarket display if it didn't show at least SOC and climate control. Even if one was available that showed all the info, it'd be way too expensive for me to warrant replacing unless it was cheaper than factory if the factory unit fails.

As far as the radio though, I have a double din pioneer unit. Metra sells single and double din kits for the gen II Prius. The kit comes with the 68ohm resistor required to maintain MFD operation with the factory unit removed and you can get a controller for the head unit to maintain steering wheel controls.

Yeah, I had a 2din kenwood in my '04. with the aftermarket speakers it sounded way better than the jbl in my '06. and with the pro-clip mounted smart phone I had 3 touch screens in front of me. 1 big screen like a tesla would be bad @$$ though...

That's no lie! They're sexy looking.

Just got my prius and I had the stereo in my xterra when I traded. I put the factory unit back in the xterra and put the pioneer in the prius along with my 8" infinity sub. If I had thought about it, I would have taken the 6.5" component kenwoods I had in the front doors. They were nice.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread from oblivion but I have been looking at this as well but some interesting things have come about with the release of Android Automotive(Not Android Auto) where they have preset apps built in to control HVAC or show SOC. The only issue would be building a board to interface with the BEAN BUS as well as CAN BUS then building a library of the corresponding hex codes to interface with each of the systems.

Yes, it’s back ,the dated thread, but on an 08 with just the basic stock radio, is there a kit for Apple CarPlay? Or am I even asking the right question.

Installed this on my 2009 Prius to replace stock stereo. No complains in terms of functions since installation. Wireless/Wired Android Auto / Carplay works. ASURE 9" Carplay Touchscreen Radio | PriusChat . There actually a lot of options out there, but bought this off amazon for peace of mind reasons that I can return it if I had issues and added a 3 year warranty for 20 usd. Additionally customer service has been very responsive.

Thank you for the lead, I did however ask the wrong question. This unit looks great but we are apple friendly only, so I need to have a similar apple unit

I see, think would be hard to find one that is specifically apple unit. Check https://www.crutchfield.com/S-sL2Y3ucgXhH/m_770/Apple-Android-Integration.html , their site have custom filter that narrows your choices to the functions you like.

    Hope that helps.
