    Hi everyone,
    First post,

I recently bought a 2006 Prius from Facebook Marketplace. The car came with only one key, a Smart Key, but it doesn’t seem to fully function. Here’s the situation:

    1. The Smart Key does not lock or unlock the car remotely.

    2. I can only unlock the car using the physical metal key.

    3. I can only start the car by inserting the key into the ignition port.

    4. I replaced the battery on the Smart Key, and I can confirm the buttons work because the little red light on the key turns on whenever I press them.

I purchased an OBD reader and Techstream software from eBay, intending to program the car myself. However, I ran into an issue during the programming process:

    • When Techstream asks me to hold the lock button on the key, it fails at this step because the key does not lock or unlock the car at all.

I’m unsure how to proceed from here.

Additionally, I have not yet purchased a second key because I want to figure out what to do with the current key before investing in another one.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Do I need to reprogram the current key first, or is there something else I should try? Any advice on next steps would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for the help!

    A few things:

    1) There's a button under the steering wheel that allows you to turn the smart key function on and off...

    2) You can confirm your car is equipped with SKS (some are not) by access the spare tire area and looking for a white box about twice as a big as a matchbox on the driver's side above the spare tire wheel well. If it's not an SKS Prius its way easier to program the FOBs.

    3) It sounds like person who sold the car had the original RFID chip inside the FOB that starts the engine when FOB is in the slot, as well as physical key to open the door, but they put it in a FOB that's not programmed for the car and you might need to do a wipe and reseed of the immobilizer to get new FOBs to work normally.

    1. The button for smart key function under steering is in the on position

    2. I found the white box in the trunk

    3. If i were to do a wipe and reseed, I saw on the forum i have to buy a seed?

That button disables the SKS, so the "not disabled" would be with the button out. Is that what you have?

I am actually surprised how easy I can chicken dance a used salvage yard keyfob to working as described. Really easy, if you perform the steps correctly, on either a Smart key system or not with or without a silver label Toyota fob. However, with the Smart Key cars and Smart Key used fob, I've not yet been able to chicken dance in the Smart Key functionality. I'll try to double check next, though I think all have been able to at least do the door locks and start with the fob in the slot functionality. None as of yet though, which reminds me I need to confirm they have a chip inside the fob, with Smart Key functionality via a chicken dance method.

Reminds me if anyone can confirm which all ECU's and/or modules are required if say I pull from a salvage yard car with a fob that came with it that is SKS capable... assuming full functionality did work good. Seems SKS have three or four required and non-SKS have maybe two or three.

Simply put you can't use the (or a) "Chicken Dance" to add a used SKS fob. It has to be a new (and uninstalled) fob. I did read a post where a guy successfully added a used fob by deleting all keys and reseeding the immobilizer ECU so he could essentially use the "All Keys Lost" procedure. This can only be done using Techstream (or another advanced options scan tool) that has the security options enabled and you need the right J2534 cable/dongle to do it.
The RFID chip provides dead fob battery redundancy and is what makes the car start with the key in the slot. It has no bearing on SKS functionality.
Not sure what you're asking here. Are you asking what components are required to upgrade a non-SKS car to have SKS functionality? Or, are you asking what additional components go with the fob that you need to pull so you can do a transplant operation to get the acquired fob working in another car without having to go through any kind of initialization process?

AFAIK, for a SKS Gen2 you need the hybrid control ecu, ID code box (screws to the firewall side of the HVAC housing), and the transponder ecu.
