You just spelled out my worst fear. I was notified the day this car was allocated to this dealership because I knew their allocation dates. Received the call 11/16. I’d been watching cars back in 2023. The shipping from Japan to East coast dealerships takes about 4 weeks, right? I remember the allocation to delivery for the 2023 Prius was about 6 weeks.

Originally the Toyota website stated build phase with estimated delivery 12/17- 1/2 which didn’t make sense. Then it switched to 12/31- 1/20 which made more sense to me. If this was accurate then the “random” pick for the QC check occurred while it was on the boat from Japan.

The last time I "waited" for a new car was 2008 when everybody wanted a Prius because gas had doubled from $2 to $4 overnight. The pundits were forecasting $6-$10 gas soon - if and when you could get it. Prii over msrp and loaded with distributor and dealer bs was normal.

We ordered one at the closest dealer and another at a dealer an hour away. Waited a couple of months with no feedback. One day the second dealer called and a Silver Trim 2 was ready. We ran down and bought it cash. A week later the second dealer called, he had the Silver Trim 3 we really wanted. Drove over and financed it at 0% from Toyota Financial. We went from mad hybrid lust to dual Prii in the garage. Joined Priuschat and flipped the first for a tidy profit.

The latest hot buy was two years ago with a new Rav4 XSE in white and black. No order, just got a call from a dealer in Austin and drove up and picked it up. No msrp markup and once again got below market Toyota financing.

Guess what, you get over car lust pretty quick but Toyota quality lasts long after the price (and minor flaws) are forgotten.

My experience was on a Camry produced in the US, Allocation of Japan produced vehicles may differ.

My son had to search for his 2023 RAV4 Prime XSE. He ended up doing out of state and found one at list price when the few other dealers were charging over list. He has enjoyed it and just recently finally paid it off. It replaced hos 2015 Prius V. It was in great demand so he god over book value for it on trade.

I just found out my Prius build was completed 11/8 and arrived at the Newark NJ port on 12/18 which is inline with the original estimated delivery date. The QC hold is for 70 days and began 11/20. This person told me since Covid he has heard of a few instances where Toyota has shipped cars to the US port while waiting for sensors or other parts to come in which seems bizarre but possible.

I was also told that a 70 day hold is most likely a large group of cars that are being held for QC check or mine was the lucky one to be pulled for QC. With this long of a delay it’s typically not damage but time will tell.

Yeah, they select the vehicle to be "randomly checked" based on whichever vehicle their most clumsy employee put a dent in, yet again!

This is the correct answer for a surprising number of delays in most every aspect of life.

Call the Toyota Logistic Services, Newark, NJ, and find out what kind of problem the car has so that you can decide whether you want to go on with the purchase.

Would be great if I could find out but I tried calling and can’t get through without knowing extension numbers. They obviously don’t want customers calling.

Enter a random extension number and then, when someone answers, ask for the correct number.

Perhaps try again some other time. The person normally picking up the phone might be on vacation, as it is Christmas time.

Yes, I’ll try next week. I did hear of another Prius that’s in the same status. It’s either a random check or a faulty part. Wouldn’t it be nice if they were resolving the 12v battery and cheap, fragile plastic hatch issue but I doubt it.

For the 12-V battery, the only way to resolve the problems is to replace the Gen 4/Gen 5 OEM flooded-cell battery with an AGM battery at your own cost.

No, there is no issue with the app. The OEM flooded-cell battery isn't charged properly by the battery-management system (BMS) when you drive the car—that's the problem.
