My son recently had a minor accident and shortly thereafter the engine began making a horrific noise. We towed it to the place that was doing the front end damage repair and they are saying that the engine has a hole in it and needs replacing. The insurance is saying it is not related to the accident. I made a few calls and was told about 8k for a new engine. Yikes! Is it worth spending that much? The car has about 102k miles on it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I don't know what to do.

First you are not getting a new engine for $8k. Most likely a rebuilt engine depending where you get it.

These engines do have several serious issues including bad head gaskets that can blow a hole in the block when initial symptoms are ignored. Oil burning and expensive brake booster fails are typical as well.

A lot depends on how nice the rest of the car is, eg very good interior, body, paint and suspension may warrant an engine.

But understand fully what $8k gets you.
    Best to cheapest

    1. A professionally rebuilt engine starting from a good engine?

    2. New short block and everything else from the old engine?

    3. A JDM used in Japan engine?

    4. Or just another engine from a junkyard?

don't be complacent with only one estimate for 8 grand. Call around locally. Than after you've talked with some local shops give GasketMasters a call. It might even be worth your time to have the car shipped up to Dallas to have the work done at one of GasketMasters authorized shops there in Dallas.

I was also considering recommending taking to the Original Shop in San Fran. They have an excellent reputation with Prius. I was also thinking of Hybrid Pit Stop, also in southern Cal.

Take a look around and see what you can find out.

GasketMasters also has a youtube channel where you can learn a lot about how they do many Prius repairs
(mostly for DIYers ) it's a great resource when faced with a difficult Prius Issue.

Make sure the EGR system and intake manifold (has EGR passages) are cleaned, to prevent another engine failure. More information on EGR cleaning, and head gasket repair, in my signature (on a phone turn landscape to see signatures).

yeah, i'd want someone to point out the hole. keep in mind you'll be needing a new battery at some point, and maybe a brake actuator
