PPF stands for Paint Protection Film? Is it established the rims have this? Have you had it since new? Seems to be an aftermarket product.

Yes. Toyota has PPF on bumpers, mirror cups, and door handles (virtually all painted plastic parts), and door-handle nests on new Japanese-built Toyotas as well. Of course it is not aftermarket—he just bought his car. Besides, you know by now how the Gen 5 OEM wheels look like.

The PPF on door handles and bumpers etc. are add on accessories. They don’t come with every Prius unless you or the dealership have added them. I remember it was quite expensive to add it on to the bumpers. Maybe previous generations included PPF as standard?

I haven’t seen it offered through Toyota but that doesn’t mean they aren’t coating the wheels with some sort of protection.

This is not true. My 2021 Prius Prime Limited came with PPF from the factory on all those parts I listed—no port-installed or dealer-add-on accessories were included.

In fact, even the replacement mirror cup I bought had PPF on it. Click on and enlarge the picture to see it:

To get PPF on the hood, you need to add it as an accessory though. Moreover, the accessory PPF is probably thicker and more resistant than the factory PPF.

Back in 2023 there were several PPF packages available. Maybe they still are available. I know because I had the PPF accessories removed back in 2023. I have test driven several 2023 and 2024 and they did not have PPF on them. Maybe on the mirror (I wasn't looking there) but definitely not on the handles, hood etc. Plus why would they change from making the hood PPF an expensive accessory to including it in the price without listing it in the details and adjusting the MSRP. Maybe all Primes get PPF. The Prius XLE’s arriving in New England don’t.

Given the irregular shape of the wheel, perhaps this is some sort of a clear-coat paint instead of PPF, as the OP originally thought.

You don’t get hood PPF from the factory. You need to buy it as a port or dealer accessory.

Yes, there is still a PPF-port-accessory package. It is only for the hood, fenders, mirror backs, and door cups. The painted bumpers don’t get it perhaps because they already come with some sort of a PPF from the factory. Painted mirror backs come with PPF from the factory, but since Gen 5 does not have painted mirror backs (they are black plastic), accessory PPF is available for them.

Otherwise, some sort of a factory PPF should be standard on painted bumpers, painted mirror covers, and painted door handles, as plastic painted parts scratch very easily. You can see the PPF in the replacement-mirror-cup picture I linked above, and I could also see the edges of the PPF on my bumpers. The factory PPF, especially on the bumpers, is likely much thinner than the 3M PPF sold as an accessory though.
