Anybody know whether the size of the front brakes (more precisely, the size of the front calipers and rotors) is the same, or different, on the gen5 prius prime, vs. the gen5 prius hybrid? Trying to figure out if there will potentially be any clearance issues with a 16" steel toyota spare wheel rim ...
Front brake rotors on the PHEV and AWD HEV are the same 12", while they're 11" on the FWD HEV. 16" spare is available for the AWD HEV, suggesting no extra issues with a 16" on the PHEV. Is a bit snug though. What's acceptable for a spare might be less so for general use. Here's a previous thread on the topic: 16 inch wheels to fit 2023 prime? | PriusChat
I'm also going to suggest that a 16" temp spare wheel is not the same thing as a 16" full depth wheel. The standard full size wheel is 62.5% wider than the temp spare wheel.* There's a very real chance that the spare wheel doesn't even get close to the calipers. I could go out and take some detailed measurements, but it's currently 0F/-18C outside, so I don't wanna. lol *full wheel is 6.5" wide; temp wheel is 4" wide
No, the temp wheel is not 4" wide. At least not according to the one I just got from toyota (and I used the part no. in your post). It is a full 5" wide. If this is not correct, did I get the wrong one? Is the temp wheel supposed to be 4" wide? Is your temp spare 4" wide?
No, you got the right one. It's just that wheels are measured a little weird in some ways. The 4" and 6.5" are from bead seat to bead seat. So if the full width of the spare wheel is 5", then the full width of the regular wheel is something like 7.5" or 8". It's just like if you measure the full height of the spare wheel, you'll find that it's probably close to 18" and not 16".
Ah, gotcha. Thanks. I measured it just now and, yes, inner bead seat-to-inner bead seat is 4" wide there. But, for the curious, the diameter of the wheel (full height) is about 17.25". I also weighed the bare rim and it appears to be somewhere in the range of 15.6 to 16.0 lbs (my scale is crappy). A yokohama temp spare tire appears to be 13 lbs (claimed). So, conservatively, it appears that this disc temp spare will be around 29 lbs in total.
This is what I was approximating as well. Which is why I thought it was laughable when my dealership added a carrying capacity warning sticker on the inside of the door frame stating that modifications to the vehicle had reduced vehicle’s original carrying capacity by 15 lbs… I brought the vehicle in for service and found the sticker afterward — I presumed it was in reference to the spare, but I suppose it could have been in reference to something else entirely (like a correction to the published spec or something…)
I don't think it's about the spare. I just got my totally stock SE prime on Dec. 1 and it had the same sticker on the door frame. I noticed it and also wondered what it was all about. Anyone have any guesses?
