I just picked up a 2019 C in really good condition. I was VERY surprised to learn that 4 speakers meant 2 in each front door... so now I have a project. I've found some schematics, but would like to know if there are any photos of the back of the radio unit to see where the connectors are, while I need to take it out or just fiddle around behind it, just what connector I'll be shopping for, AND what are some of your favorite speakers for the back doors? Yeah, I know about Cruthfield, just thought I'd start here first. Thanks for any info!

Speaker drivers are subjective.. plug a driver up in rear it may work like most cars. Maybe no new plugs needed.

I put a set of Infinity Reference REF-6532ex in ours. Front and rear doors.

I also put in Infinity Reference REF-375tx in place of the factory tweeters in the front doors.

That was 6 years ago, still thrilled with the sound. Note that we are driving them from a Sony head unit because we wanted CarPlay, but they'll work fine with the factory setup.

On the factory radio, look for the two oldest biggest chunkiest connector blocks. One is 10 pins and the other is 6. They are often side-by-side. They're big and chunky because they are mostly unchanged since the 1980s.

The rear speaker lines are all in that 6 pin shell, because once upon a time rear speakers were rare so lots of old Toyotas only have the 10 pin block. Pretty much everything since 1990 includes both connectors.

I'm not sure whether you'll find wires or even pins in that connector for that version of the car, so you may need to get a generic Toyota harness. Crutchfield can definitely help you with that.

From memory (do not trust!) the rear left was pins 2 & 6 green, right was pins 1 & 3 brown.

Thanks for all the info. Here's what the Crutchfield rep. told me. I need a Line Output Converter because he says the radio is only set up to handle the two front speakers. Then I need an amplifier to get good power to all the speakers. Then he recommended these speakers. Front speakers and separate tweeters, Rear 2-way speaker and tweeter in one.

The reasoning was that with all the electronics and hybrid stuff in the car this would avoid some dramatic problems down the road.

I have put extra speakers in cars before, but always just a matter of hooking them to the back of a head unit with extra connectors.

This car is an "L" and not an "LE". I believe the LE had a different radio. You probably already figured that out because I do not have rear speakers. Anyone have experience with this one?

So... What's the story? The Crutchfield info seems like a LOT of fuss and money I don't want to spend. Anyone know if that's really necessary or is there just a hookup in the back of the head unit ready to go?

Also, since I haven't started poking around yet, any pics of the rear of the head unit and/or instructions for gettin to it?

Again, any and all info appreciated!

You are probably the priuschat.com guinea pig for this.

For the 2018 model year there were 4 trims, one two three four as named.

For 2019 they simplified it to L and LE. The L is more or less a one, and the LE is more or less a three. But they hardly made or sold any 2019s at all, and I think you're the first member to post about that year/trim, so the real differences aren't likely to be confirmed by anyone on this site.

So I suggest you pop out the head unit and have a look for yourself. You get there by gently prying off the fascia panel that surrounds the stereo & HVAC controls. Use a plastic prybar or a wooden chopstick or similar soft tool. The whole panel just pops straight off towards you.

After that you remove four JIS (looks like Phillips) screws from the plastic bracket that holds the head unit to the dash frame, one in each corner.

Once that is done you can maneuver the whole head unit out towards your lap and see quite a lot without having to disconnect any connectors. None of the connectors are the same as each other, so there is no risk of putting a plug into the wrong socket during reassembly.

If you choose to disconnect it for a better view I would suggest disconnecting the 12v battery for basic safety.
