Surprised to discover the mirror on the 2021 Prime XLS was pretty basic. I have a Homelink from a Gen3, can the mirror be switched? Is there a homelink wire harness available in the header?

If not, I have a small battery operated remove that I'd like to set up to look like a custom installed garage door opener. For instance there is no HUD display but the blank is there... could one setup the remove behind that blank and put in a pushbutton to push the button of the small remote? Bit clunky...don't want to clip the remote anywhere visible.

i remember once, a guy dissected his remote, installed an oem button in a blank on the dash, connected to the remote behind it.
can't remember which car forum i was on, maybe miata. it was very clever.

That is even better...I was thinking of affixing the remote in its existing case, and a button w/something to push the remote button... not quite duck tape but probably not too many degrees away. I am open to removing the remote chip. Where can one get OEM buttons to fit blanks?

salvage/ebay/dealer i suppose. i have gotten used to the remote clipped onto the passenger sunshade, since my 2012 didn't have home link.
a built in would be cool, but i'm too lazy

Can't say yet if the Gen3 HomeLink mirror will fit the same as the one in this video.

(and, I didn't clip the wiring harness from the previous vehicle...anyone know what to order for wiring harness if going this route? I almost prefer an obscure button somewhere in the car rather than reaching up every time.

I just got a mini keychain style remote and velcroed it to a flat spot of the dash in front of my knee more or less next to the buttons I never push down there.

It's worked great for years now.

    Maybe the easiest solution....

Just found the following tutorial which would be one step further...simple enough yet still dependent on battery.
Add a Hidden Garage Door Opener to Your Vehicle
I think velco the remote in a hidden spot would be best.

Saw a few videos of custom button which then hardwires the remote into the car itself...and that pushes into too much time/effort/risk space for its worth. Velco likely the way I'll go.

We have the homelink mirror remote in our other car.

Honestly if there's one thing I could change about it, it would be to not have the buttons on the mirror in the first place. I know the Gentex guys were really reaching to try and soup up their mirrors and make them worth more $ but it has all felt like a bad move to me.

I don't like it when the mirror gets bumped out of position or if I miss the target and leave a fingerprint.

I haven't gone so far as to velcro another remote into that car but I'm close.

Toyota sells a battery powered homelink mirror for retrofits. No wiring necessary.
