I'm getting the trouble that clearly points to my needing to replace the fuel tank.

New ones are $1,300 or so unless someone here knows where I can get one cheaper.

These fail by age so a used one is not going to work unless I somehow find a wreck/part-out that had it replaced at some point. There's no way to tell by looking online whether that's the case.

What's the best way to source a replacement fuel tank?

Call around to the local dealers, price will vary. Check their on line prices, which may be significantly lower. Three local dealers on line prices near me were $1332, $1390, and $1448. This is for 77001-47090.

I do not know of any source other than Toyota. So dealer for new, or junkyard for used.

this is what I did.. goto facebook marketplace and search "2004 prius part" and you should see listings for people selling parts off the car. most times it'll say part out. be sure to only buy one from your year Prius! I actually have one for a 2009 and to bad you don't live in So Cal and drive an 09 because it would be yours for $200. I bought for $250.

also.. most places on FB marketplace with them are actual auto dismantlers in your area. I'd advise you to also find out the warranty on their items. Dont pay more than $300 especially if no warranty is included. Even a 7 day is good, 30 or more is better. You wouldn't want to buy the tank and find out its bad. I ended up getting the tank connector to the tank pump from a car at a pick ur part, then using it with a 12V battery to test the one I was buying beforehand. I asked if I could pour some seafoam in the tank so there was some fluid to pump through during my test and it would also serve as a cleaner through the pump and filter.

in my case... turns out my tank and pump were good, one of the pins to the pump bent down and didn't make a connection through the plug... only found this out after buying tank and about to start the work.. for $hits and giggles I decided to test my pump one more time.. and it worked! smdh.

So if anyone in so cal with a 08 or 09 that needs a tank.. I got one for da low

Thank you so much! I had a $300 replacement tank 10 miles away lined in ten minutes after I searched FB marketplace.

contrary to popular belief... I am here to help the community and show that there are other ways of doing things and it's okay to think outside the box while going against the grain. but...

did they give you any warranty? that's the part in all this used things... on the tank and say buying any electronic or ABS part. I mean, Toyota doesn't even give you a warranty on electrical items when you buy them new from them, even a 7 day warranty I try to get just in case but then you think about it, on the gas tank, you could buy two used tanks and bound to get one that'll go the distance for cheaper than a new tank from Toyota so... that's a gamble I'm willing to take. heh, just now, I have an extra tank and at least I know its working one so there's that.

I have a few fuel tanks for 2004-2005 prius, but most of them have been sitting for over 4 years. After ~ 4 years gasoline with ethanol becomes gummy. What happened to your fuel tank? Do you have a fuel lean code and was told that the fuel pump needs to be replaced?
