I think you are right. Or at least they don't provide enough data. I also think I was wrong above where I said that pedestrian deaths had doubled. They went up from around 2000 to 2019 (even before the pandemic). But not doubled. I wonder how they compare to population growth.

    Pedestrians

Other driver (drivers of the other car or cars involved in an accident) death rate goes by number of registered vehicles. Which isn't the best metric in my opinion. Then again, all variables would be great, but getting down to the nitty gritty would also make it inaccurate. The Chevy Bolt does excellent, but then again, maybe this car on average has far fewer miles than the average car.

So just to confirm my thinking…

Car A sells 10 cars which comes out to 365 days/year x 10 cars = 3650 days driven in one year.
If there were 5 deaths that year, you would get 3650 days/5 deaths = 730 days/death.

I was thinking deaths/miles driven would be far better. However, if mileage is simply an estimate, and is the same estimate for all cars, then days seems just as valid as miles (maybe more).

If you drive a lot, your personal risk would be higher. Likewise, if you are on the roads less than average, your risk goes down.

It’s similar to the EPA. It gives a good comparative base of different vehicles. Your personal results may vary:)

This is what iseecars is trying to measure here.

Close. The 'days' is exact because I only use cars of the model year 2022 and higher. Some manufacturers upgrade their model year in September.

Never forget these are only the cars, motorcycles, and trucks involved in 2022 fatal accidents. I have no information about the total number of cars that were not in fatal accidents or accident free. But Tesla makes this easy ... for Teslas.

The Tesla Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 financial reports have Model 3/Model Y and Model S/Model X production numbers. A feasible basis of estimate would use 1/2 the days in a quarter times the production numbers in that quarter plus full quarter days from the earlier quarters. But without similar metrics for the other vendors, it is more 'grins and giggles' than useful.

For me, we have an understanding how many actual fatal accidents occur in the first year of ownership:
    • Motorcycles are deadly!
    • For to 23 cars and pickup trucks
    fatalities make(model)
    21 Toyota (Corolla)
    20 Ram (1500)
    18 Nissan (Altima)
    15 Hyundai (Elantra)
    15 Toyota (Camry)
    12 Kia (Sportage)
    10 Honda (Civic)
    10 Kia (Forte)
    10 Tesla (Model 3)
    9 Chevrolet (Malibu)
    9 Honda (CR-V)
    8 Chevrolet (Equinox)
    8 Chevrolet (Silverado)
    8 Tesla (Model S)
    8 Toyota (RAV4)
    7 Buick (Encore GX)
    7 Dodge (Charger)
    7 Hyundai (Tucson)
    7 Mitsubishi (Outlander)
    6 Chevrolet (Silverado LTD)
    6 Honda (CMX500 (Rebel500))
    6 Hyundai (Santa Fe)
    6 Hyundai (Kona)

Since the Model 3 and Model S show up in the top 23 list excluding motorcycles and trucks, I can't rule out the earlier claim.

Whether the study has errors aside, I think many are misunderstanding what they were measuring. The number of deaths for a model they are presenting isn't just counting the occupants that died in the crash. It is also including the deaths of other people involved in said crash. A model that has zero fatalities to drivers and passengers, but kills every pedestrian, biker, and everyone else in the other car that it hits is going to have a poor rating by this measurement while getting high scores in traditional methods.

I find it interesting that a 2020 Camry has only 19 drivers that die per million registered vehicle years, yet is involved in 66 accidents that kill the driver of the other vehicle per million registered vehicle years

However, the Ford Fusion seems to be the exact opposite. Which is more altruistic and which is more egoistic, to put your own life at a greater risk or that of others?

The buyer has a list of priorities and occupants that have a higher priority than those who did not help buy that car. But this is a brutal way to restate the 'Problem of the Commons.'

Which is why most people go buy the biggest, pedestrian crushing, SUV that they can afford. I know plenty of people who pledge they'll never get in a non-SUV vehicle because "safety."

I think that is more of a justification than a real reason.
SUVs tend to have higher occurances of roll overs. Extra mass will actually work against you vs stationary objects.

Convenience is why many people like SUVs.

I don't think this is actually what is being measured.

Garbage in means garbage out. They are guestimating some milage that is based on 2 years of new cars, based on them being sold as used. Why not just make up all the numbers if the methodology is all flawed. And that is what you get garbage.

people don't like musk. Some because they don't like evs, some because they don't like trump, others because they hate billioniers. But the cars are not musk, nad there needs to be some repeated valid methodology. iseecars is click bait. Believe the fars database but not the iseecars misuse of the data.

That used to be the case. With electroniv nanies and many subs being car like most roll over accidents are prevented. You can still do it but it is harder

Pickup trucks and SUVs have taken over the roadways and their bumpers don't line up with passenger cars.

Yep, even I, someone who generally dislikes SUV's, have to admit that statistically they are getting better in terms of rollovers. Even then, I still don't like them.

I know. I just got sideswiped a couple days ago by a Tacoma. The bumper marked a line along the top of my door near the window.

For some reason I can never see the YouTube videos on Prius Chat. I guess it has something to do with my home's parental controls.

Agree iseecars studies are garbage, but they aren't picking on Musk, Tesla, or EVs. There are 5 'deadilier' models on their list than the Model Y, and they all have an ICE.

I was contesting the opening statement of the preceding video that people in a Tesla are 3.7 times more likely to die. iseecars is using FARS for number of deaths. They say they looked at crashes that had "one occupant fatality to identify the most dangerous vehicles on U.S. roads today". That criteria can include crashes where the Tesla occupants were fine.

That's hilarious! I don't live with my parents. I'm the one who set up the parental controls and have no intention of taking them down even temporarily just to watch a YouTube video on PriusChat.
