First, thank you very much. This is a first, thank you very much. This is a great site. I have learned a lot and solved other little issues from reading on this site. Thank you!
Our fobs stopped working to open doors and start the car (not plugged into the car dash) consistently. They worked sometimes.
I read that this could be a door sensor, which I did not know how to change, and was afraid to start tearing the car apart. The car worked well enough for a while. After about eight months, the fobs both stopped working to open the doors.
I took the fobs to a key shop to see if they could reprogram them. Everything I tried from the Internet did not work. The key shop was not able to reprogram either fob. The fobs both work to plug into the dash and start the car, which is great. They will not open the car and they will not allow us to start the car without the fob being plugged in.
The key shop suggested I take the car to a shop that deals with the electrical system.
Would this be the consensus on this site?
The key shop swapped the door sensors because the passenger door sensor was working. So I still have one door sensor that is not working, which is the passenger side now. The light on the inside of the door does come on now. I’ve read something about the door sensor to the back hatch needing to be replaced in connection with all of this, and wonder if that will solve this issue?
The key shop suggested that it’s something with the car. That’s not letting the fobs be programmed to it.
Any advice or help is appreciated thank you!

Maybe a stupid question, but have new batteries been installed into the two key fobs?

Are there any fault codes present? If one of the interior oscillators is not working, it will generate a fault code. (DTC).
B2793 - Transponder chip malfunction - Smart key (Door control transmitter)
B2794 - Unmatched Encryption code - Smart key (Door control transmitter)
B2795 - Unmatched key code - Smart key (Door control transmitter)
These are some of the fault DTCs.

Is the key light on the dash blinking? If not investigate the fuse box under the hood.
Insert each key into the slot in the dash. The flashing key light should go out.
Check all the keys. If a key light does not go out, the key is not programmed, or the black transponder chip is missing. (On gen 2 Prius this is separate from the circuit board inside the key fob.)

Having multiple issues could be an indication of a possible issue with the wire harness. A mouse or other rodent chewing on the wire harness can cause difficult issue to track down.

When you press the lock or unlock light you should see the red light on the key fob blink. Standing outside the car with the doors locked, and key fob in hand. You should see the small red light on the key fob blink once ever 2 or three seconds. Stand by the right, left and rear of the car. This checks to see if the external oscillators are working.

This should get you started in your trouble shooting journey.
