Source: ‘Brain rot’: Oxford word of the year 2024 reflects ‘trivial’ use of social media | Social media | The Guardian “Brain rot” has been announced as the Oxford word of the year for 2024, amid concerns over endless social media scrolling and mind-numbing content. More than 37,000 people voted to help choose the winner from a shortlist of six words drawn up by Oxford University Press, the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary. ... Brain rot is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging”. Why one should not have a mirror in the house. Bob Wilson
Isn't that TWO words? Perhaps....a phrase??? C'mon Oxford. Admit it.... You procrastinated on this assignment and 'mailed it in!' What about 'brat?' Vibe?
Well in German, it is "Gehirnfäule." But then German is notorious for making multiple words into one. Bob Wilson
Looking into this a little further it would appear that there is indeed a precedent for das compound nouns - in Germany. However (COMMA!) ...... I always thought that the OED was an ENGLISH dictionary.
It is fully defined as word or expression of the year. In many years it has been expressions. So be not quick to gore that Ox. For 2024 I'd faintly object if it refers to one person's personal medical history. Various parasites can be contracted in various ways and not the fault of the victim.
Oxford must have first meant a place where oversized animals could cross a watercourse. It calls to different leadership now, as humans (when they think) are more than farm animals.
