    Might cut his sales volume by 2/3, but most of his competitors are likely to bow out of EVs altogether.

    Curious, I never bought my three Prius, EV or two PHEVs for a subsidy. I'm too cheap frugal as the operational cost savings are more than the (purchase price - salvage) value.

    Amusing in a non fun way. The current EV credit was crafted to move EV and battery production to the US, and it was doing that.

    That narrative doesn't stand a chance, since Tesla has no intention of breaking out beyond its niche. Toyota is taking its own sweet time with offerings capable of competing elsewhere with market China is pursuing. So what if it is exploiting its worldwide reach with hybrids to offset the cost of that. We'll see that void here which Tesla is refusing to address get filled by others.

    In other words, there is a massive audience for Model 2. A sampling of sedans currently available in the United States make that all too clear:

    $30,000 = 2025 Toyota Prius
    $29,535 = 2025 Toyota Camry hybrid
    $29,945 = 2025 Mini Cooper
    $29,390 = 2025 Honda Accord hybrid
    $29,280 = 2025 Nissan Leaf
    $28,145 = 2025 Kia K5
    $28,140 = 2025 Nissan Altima
    $27,800 = 2025 Hyundai Sonata
    $26,995 = 2025 Chevrolet Malibu
    $26,065 = 2025 Subaru Legacy
    $25,345 = 2025 Honda Civic
    $25,135 = 2025 Mazda 3
    $24,665 = 2025 Subaru Impreza
    $23,310 = 2025 Toyota Corolla
    $23,220 = 2025 Volkswagen Jetta
    $23,145 = 2025 Kia K4

    That market segment is absolutely vital, but quite a challenge to do well in from getting only razor-thin profit in return from each sale. With all the years of hope a Model 2 would eventually be offered, people are now finding out Tesla can't actually compete. It's an example of a business that catered to enthusiasts to such an extreme, resulting optimization now impairs the ability to appeal to the wider audience. And just like with conquest sales GM focused on, loyalty has been extremely difficult to retain.

    Ordinary showroom shoppers will be looking for an affordable choice at their favorite dealer. That is why GM has finally targeting their own loyal customers with EV models of Equinox & Blazer. That is also why Ford has their "skunkworks" project, to develop a low-cost offering. We know that Toyota is working on smaller & affordable too. Legacy auto is painfully slow, but at least they aren't choosing to stay within a niche.

    It has been obvious for years that Tesla has been dependent upon money FSD. That meant selling something in the "entry-level" category would never happen, since such a vehicle wouldn't include FSD. So, it is utter nonsense to imply: "That might leave the entire Market in the US for tesla."

    Honestly, the next administration is going to be led by a person who lies even more than a Minnesota governor.
    Why believe anything he says or are we just cherry-picking ONE thing from some random three hour interview?

    Kind of sad - continuing to slap the niche term on Tesla even after millions & millions of their conquest sales. It made sense to call them a niche in the early days when they were only getting conquests against the prius, but as it stands, and I know you don't want to be nailed down as to what a niche is, sales wise, but even if Tesla were the 5th largest manufacturer in the world, might you still be using the niche pejorative against them?
    As for China? Toyota only got permission to keep selling ANY cars to China because they hammered out a deal to offer X% of their overall offerings as electric cars in china. That's disingenuous to suggest otherwise.
    Yes, Toyota will do just fine, even though their EV offerings will continue to remain 'average' quality - compared to other EV's. If Toyota can deal with that? That's fine too. Obviously shareholders were disgruntled with Toyota's slow approach as that's why they ousted/voted out their leadership.

    you can look at it that way, and history certainly makes a case for it. but 4 years (or more) of major benefits to both parties wouldn't surprise me at all.

    EV adoption is going to be like CAFE standards. It's always just on the horizon, but it never actually arrives.

    Just as soon as it looks like it's going to happen, along comes an administration that doesn't want it to happen.

    every time USA designs an incentive for Hybrids or EV's. one primary objective is to block Japanese auto makers from benefiting too much.

    I wish I could get Bob's math to work for me. Owing an EV or PHEV at a cost savings that's overall greater than an ICEV would be awesome!

    That's why I got the Nissan Leaf. It was going to be the cheapest way to keep moving myself around. Except I couldn't get it to work for me.

    I'm hopeful that maybe some day.

    Arguably not niche anymore, but still expensive. Even if considering used or with both federal and state incentives the cost of a Tesla is prohibitive, at least for me. Sadly, it's not just Tesla but insurance that ends up being the real killer in my case.

    Then again, it's been 6 years since I was in the market for a car. I'm not exactly sure what I'd buy if suddenly I needed another car. Hopefully it would be an EV.
