I went to pick up a new OEM HV battery today for my 08. When I unboxed the new battery, it came with new leads but there was no vent tube installed. looking under the cover I see vents on the cells where a potential vent tube would go, but they look slightly different than the old battery. the vents are smooth and uniform, whereas on the original battery the vent tubes on the cells have a conical shape that grips the silicone tube to keep it from popping off. Can I use the vent tube from the previous battery?

Your new battery probably doesn't take vent tubes look at the rubber strips that run down your battery on your old battery try to move those to the new battery I don't think they'll lay down properly and if you look down in those holes that you pulled your rubber hoses off your original battery which you probably can't because you turned it in The newer ones are unvented so you can lay the rubbers down if you save them I don't know what you turned in I don't have the picture. But I believe the newer setups the one I put in my '09 during the pandemic at the beginning of no vent tubes either so the vent tube that's in the car that penetrates the floorboard mine's just turned 90° and laying there to doing nothing I could have pulled it out and thrown it away but it keeps that hole sealed up and all that back where it is so I just left it. So I wouldn't sweat it I don't think your new battery vents look at those little titties that stick up that the rubber tube strip goes down running the top of each side of the battery they're they're no holes there right they're sealed up take a q-tip size stick or something and stick it in try and stick it in there it stops I do believe.

Thanks. I will take the cover off tomorrow and look down into them. i'm pretty wiped today, as i drove a few hours to get this battery and back and had to unexpectedly take off the old battery control module when i got there when i realized the new battery didn't come with one. anyway, i'm attaching a picture of the new battery "vent" hole. like you mention they look different than the original which had a conical shape (titties that you eloquently called them?) at the top to grip the rubber vent harness

Toyota phased out that vent tube system starting in I think 2011. The cooling system for OEM battery is a sufficient venting system, but you can use your old ones if want, they'll fit. There's a problem with the type of material those vent tubes are made with in that they interact with the gas that vents from the battery cells causing a foul smell. If you have a Prius with that smell coming out of air intake next to passenger side back seat not installing your old vent tubes will help prevent that issue.

good to know. I'll clean out the fan before buttoning up everything to make sure the cooling system is operating well. and i guess not install the vent tube?

Yeah like I said I think all the new batteries that you buy now at the Toyota dealership or through that system The vents don't go anywhere You can put the rubber tubes on and the white y connector at the back and the tube from the car that goes to the floor all on they're just not doing anything I tend to leave them off it seems to give a little more room for air flow doesn't have to smash into those two big fat tubes that are almost an inch diameter taking up that space.

Looks like there's a Gen 5 module now. The Gen 4 has a barb on that fitting. Can you provide a photo of the entire top of the module?

The barb is there I think on most of the modules when they're not using the vent you can look down the little vent hole and see it goes nowhere You can put a tube on it and blow on it and it's just nothing full of vacuum on it little bury the gauge.

You misunderstand what I wrote. Every Gen module prior to this "photo" has a barb at the top of that tube, whether the tube is used for a pressure relief or blanked off. That photo shows a tube that is straight and smooth from top to bottom, no barb. It's different, so must be Gen 5, which I've never seen yet.

While I have the smart people here, can anyone confirm this is where the ground foil thing is goes on the BCM? I want to confirm because I can't see it on the picture I took before I broke it down off of the old battery, it's buried underneath. looks like it goes where the tie down is directly next to the computer module?

Yes it goes down there That's where you should have taken it off from It's the bottom nut that holds down the battery computer that strip of foil and whatever else you got down there and eylet or something

I think you're going to have a problem. Did you save the black plastic piece that mounts on top of the white end clamp? The wire you have that goes on top of the modules and has the temperature sensor should clip into it as it passes over the white wall/clamp piece. If you left it on the core and turned it in, you're going to damage your new battery. That black plastic piece forces cooling air from the fan to flow downward through the modules. If you don't have it, the air will just blow across the top of the modules and out to other side.

I do in fact have the vent tube. I left it on the battery then drove home, realized new one didnt have it, and ordered it on ebay and should come tomorrow. It was only a few bucks.

if it is required it is strange they did not include it on the battery. It comes with everything else needed under the battery hood. New leads, new nuts for the leads, new insulation, new temp sensor harness already attached, but no vent tube attached? Very odd. I believe the idea is that there is already a fan and exhaust attached to the battery at all times so it’s sucking out whatever vapor is coming off. But does the fan run whenever the car is on? I only hear it ramp up where there is a red triangle of death.

On low you will not hear fan till at stop light or driveway sitting . If listening carefully. Newer units vents closed off

Look at the battery photo in this ebay auction. I'm talking about the black plastic piece that clips into place on top of the white end clamp nearest the ecu. Without it, your battery will overheat. The metal case seals against the top and sides of it to prevent cooling air from just blowing out the end of the case. It stops the air flow and forces it to go downward between the modules.

There's also one attached at the bottom of the same end clamp, but it's already installed on the new battery, the top one is not, because it is very easy to just pop it off when you have to remove the inlet air temperature wire and sensor anyway.

Well most people have that when they disassemble their business enough to take the core in and have the pieces to reassemble unless they just haven't read up and don't know what they're doing which I guess happened maybe here I don't know I might have that plastic piece I've got a bunch of racks assembled with the nylon ends so I should have the black pieces not necessarily clipped to those but probably laying on the floor right near all the battery stuff that's getting ready to go to the dump or somewhere But yeah usually that's gets thrown in the trunk when you're disassembling the business getting ready to go get your new battery You take the front end off the ground screw for the ECU and all that has to be undone any of the plastic duct work plastic end caps any of that stuff just gets thrown in the spare tire well that's why it needs to be dry back there and then all you're pulling out is to rack of modules and the bottom tray essentially less weight really. Anyway yeah you'll probably want that piece or you can stuff some foam in there you know like they use under metal roofing that sort of thing any of that kind of open or closed cell phone and say a 1-in square would probably get it Can you put around your air window air conditioner when you have to have one

interesting, i see what you're talking about now and i do see it on the picture of my old battery. I'll try to get a part number. on this diagram, it looks like 74473B. is that what you're referring to?

looks like it's part number 74473 and can buy it here 74473-47010 Genuine Toyota Spacer, Battery. I ordered it. Good eye, thank you.

i have discovered there is a fine line to walk posting about technical stuff as a non-mechanic. sounding just dumb enough so people who are smarter and more experienced call me out and correct me, or in this case, point out things i totally missed like the battery spacer. rather obvious to experienced people but not to idiots like me who drove 3 hours to get this thing and don’t have both batteries together at the same time. I figured the fan is always going at an inaudible rate but just making sure, since I’ve only done this once. it’s a third vehicle for us. Not worth it to have it done professionally, but worth it to try and mess it up in my own garage. So thanks for your help everyone.

Vent tube and battery spacer are in, fired right up and went into ready mode. This dummy did it thanks for your help. Gonna ride with a fire extinguisher for a couple days in case it decides to splode on me
