In another thread I mentioned an article on how smoking and gas sales per vehicle used to contribute to the CA budget and now not so much.

So all you have to do is pay more income taxes and the so called sin taxes can be replaced. You have the ability to initiate the change by referendum so go advocate for that ...or for spending less on .... oh wait a minute ... you want that but ...

I'm not really worried about "out of state" drivers paying no gasoline tax. We'll pick up enough from the "mini-mart" junk food at our gas stations to more than cover their travel on our roads. Heck, if quality roads encourages vacation visitors and new businesses, bring it on.

They make all the parts in the US? The Camry is at 60% US content.

The Tacoma is Mexico, the Tundra is USA. The RAV4, the second largest selling US Toyota, excluding the PHEV (Japan), comes from Canada.

Canada has said even the proposed 10% tariff would be devastating. That is ironic considering, in the 60s & 70s, companies formed Canadian subsidiaries to avoid Canadian taxes & tariffs. When I worked up there, I worked for Pitney bows Canada, not Pitney Bowes Inc due to the tax/tariff policy.

The RAV 4 Hybrid is made right here in the USA in Kentucky -
Toyota is doing outstandingly well and will continue to do so.
Back in the old days people would put grocery bags over their heads and breathe deeply to settle themselves down.
Remember this is a radicalized forum with off centered viewpoints - it often doesn't jive with reality or the majority common sense well centered views .
Everything is going to be just fine and well positioned conservative Automakers like Toyota are going to do exceptionally well in any environment.

Back in the 1987 when Toyota built its first Plant in the USA the UAW forced its coalition of Unionized Parts Manufacturers to exclude Toyota - how did that turn out?

Later the UAW organized Union Truckers and their Companies to exclude Toyota and refuse to haul freight for them - how did that turn out?

The UAW has long given Political Donations to certain Parties to help hinder and eliminate non -union transplants from coming to America - how has that turned out?

Many here on Prius Chat have long been sounding the death watch for Toyota because the company didn't fit their concept of heralding electric cars and jumping in sight unseen - how has that worked out?

I don't see this as the death of Toyota. But there are industry analysts, such as Kirk Kreifels, that feel that this is going to hurt Toyota at least to some degree.

If ^Since Toyota is manufacturing parts or entire cars in Mexico with Mexican wages that are being brought to and sold in the USA and that becomes more expensive to do and they are faced with either continue manufacturing in Mexico at a higher cost or moving those operations to the USA at a higher wage cost then they will either cut certain makes of cars sold in the USA or they will increase their prices on said vehicles.

The Yaris was cut from the USA. The Corolla may be next. Death to the econo car!

Calling viewpointers brown paper bag hyperventilators in and of itself is drama. Yes Toyota will be fine even though they got caught with their pants down regarding Electric vehicles. The system works itself out. Disgusted shareholders ousted the Toyota head because he was directing the company in a manner that the actual stock / company/owners felt he was directing in a manner where he was caught with his pants down. Even after that mutiny, Toyota is still showing signs of resistance. But as it has been said in the past, resistance is futile when it comes to keeping up with the ev competition.

Saying, "i know more about this because I work there a long time & thus am an insider" doesn't necessarily mean much, anymore than me saying, "i worked at Disney for 37 years & thus I speak authoritatively in favor of their woke/trans/child grooming ideology. Nope. Society aften speaks differently, yet gives full weight to those minority views to say what they want to say. So we respect your right to be wrong

when i was driving my ip 6,000 miles a year, i was buying 120 gallons of gas.
ma tax is .26/g, so $37.20
i would not be happy to pay a fixed cost of $100. but it's not a deal breaker. life is sometimes unfair

While that might be true in the long run regarding sales and profits, and might be true for a short time now regarding shareholders and investors, I see no evidence that any legacy automaker would be better off with sales and profits right now due to investing in EVs. With few exceptions, most are bleeding money, some as much as a billion per quarter, on EV manufacturing.

Kirk Kreifels on YouTube analyzes this kind of stuff. Every Sunday he does one on EVs.

It's nice Toyota assembles cars in the markets where they sell them, but that isn't going to protect those models from tariffs. The Camry is the most 'American' with 60% US content. The Highlander is next with 55%. The broad scope tariffs discussed will increase costs for Toyota to make those cars and trucks.

Then greed can't be discounted with those not impacted by any tariffs.
Rather see such a fee on ICE cars than EVs. PA is going to have a $250 one on BEVs; just $50 on PHEVs.

Where did the billion figure come from? Ford reported such a loss, but it was a one time loss from canceling the three row SUV BEV program.

Toyota Canada produces RAV4 & RAV4 Hybrid at 2 different plants. I did a spot check of RAV4 inventory in the US and they showed a VIN starting with 2 indicating Canada, The RAV4 Prime showed as Japan.

The record output was for Toyota Global, not US specific.

A better indication of the American made ranking is here.

The highest Toyota is the Camry at #7. Honda has 3 vehicles above that and Volkswagen even has one.

Rivian and Lucid. I guess I didn't word that correctly. Some EV manufacturers, like Rivian and Lucid, and not legacy car manufacturers, are losing up to around a billion dollars per quarter. But legacy car manufacturers aren't doing so well either, especially on EVs. @Trollbait See 11:20 in the video about Rivian and Lucid.

@John321 Note that Toyota has dropped profits quite a bit. At 5:50 in this video it talks about how the tariffs would affect Toyota and their manufacturing in Mexico.

@hill Companies like Ford are losing some $130,000 per EV. Everyone is backing down their EV production, including GM. I'm not saying that EVs aren't the future or won't end up being more profitable than ICEVs. But at the moment, it is very difficult to make EVs profitable and in most cases are a loss. Basically the only companies that make a proffit off of EVs right now are Tesla and, at least in theory, Chinese companies.

Waiting for a link to the $100 fee on my plug in.
The tariffs are paid at the border and passed on to the consumer like a sales tax. China doesn’t pay anything. The reason for them was to offset the massive tax cuts for the rich law. Then blame the higher prices on 46, to top the con with a cherry.

Well, I guess you can see where others have their priorities.

We're in a divided world. Nobody can agree on the same thing.
