Gen 3 the modules start from the side of the fan, so if you have the battery still in the car and you are looking at it from the trunk the it is the right side. If you are sitting inside and looking towards the trunk it is the left but always remember the blocks start where the fan is.

For all batteries regardless of year or model...
    Find the negative lead.
    Start counting modules from there.

Okay Gen3 while pack is mounted in the car facing forward, #1 cell/block/module is on the far right (fan side). Right?

Left side... module #1 is always the first place the negative cable attaches to the pack.

Maybe a bit late reply but I wanted confirm the above as a future reference.
That's exactly how 3rd generation modules are numbered.
Per what the others say, Gen2 is the opposite way.

Most excellent and concise advise on HV battery verification!
working on a 2012 battery --Camry .. stupid dealers wouldnt tell me but when i finally called one from out of town i had missed the ending deadline on warranty by only 2 or 3 months this year (last year??) !!! 8 yrs or 100k miles .. which in this case, it has only 95k miles so .. I thought it was 10 years ...

Is this the same for the Prius C? module #1 is the closest to the battery cooling fan?

As installed in the car, the Gen 2 hv battery has block 1 on the passenger side.
On Toyota HV batteries, Module 1 is always the module that has a heavy orange cable connected to the (-) negative module terminal.

Out of the whole pack of modules, the extreme one on each end will have a thick orange cable connected to it.

The modules also have symbols and molded into the plastic on top.

On one end of the pack, the orange cable will be attached at the end of the module.

At the other end, the orange cable will be attached at the end of the module.

The one that has the cable attached to is module 1.

This holds across different Prius models and generations, even though it is not always the left or always the right.

A big reason why boats use fore/aft/port/starboard. It never changes.

How embarrassing—I thought I had already posted corrections everywhere I had made that mistake, but it looks like I missed this thread.

The "across different Prius models and generations" part isn't an airtight rule: the gen 1 is an exception. More here, including info on using the wiring diagram and color coding to double-check any 'rule'.

So, Gen 3 from end to the components where the wires go to? Left to right looking at it from the back of the vehicle. Right?

The block closest to the fan is the #1 block.
I think someone posted a Toyota page about that quite a while back.
