$9481 for a new battery. I would just dump it and get another car

I don't think it's too bad. Similar to the NiMH batteries. It's probably easier, since the ECU won't throw a code until a battery in one of the subpacks is completely dead.

Retail price is usually double of the cost. It must cost Toyota about $1 per Wh. PiP battery pack is 4.4 kWh.

Hello there from the future! Its 2024 now and I'm driving a 2014 Plug-in that I've owned since august of 2016. The car has 102,000 miles on it. I charge the battery twice a day (almost) every day. When I got the car it had 9,000 miles on it. Original real-world EV range was 12 miles. Today 8 years later my EV range is down to 8.5 miles. I drive to my own business which is 9 miles away - so I'm starting to consider a replacement battery - but now (in the future) there are so many EVs on the market, I'm likely to replace the car before I replace the battery.

good idea. look into a 2018 prime or newer. there really isn't much point to replacing a decent pip battery. plus, the engine could blow at any time.
