I received my toyota dash cam and took a quick look at my car and am a bit confused. I have something in its place. I thought this was a blank cover but when I removed it, i see some sort of electronic device. I'm I supposed to remove this existing black box to install the dash cam?

You're putting it on the wrong side. The dash cam goes on the passenger side. If you don't have it already, I'll link the installation instructions below. You didn't need to remove the cover you did, but you will end up removing the big one in order to access some wiring and free up the headliner.

Print and cutout the template on the second to last page, but double-check the scale is correct before you use it in case your printer settings were wrong. Put a ruler on the page and make sure the marks listed by centimeter are actually a centimeter. If they aren't, you probably printed the page with headers and footers enabled.

It's interesting that they would put the bit about "unreleased or confidential vehicles" in the service instructions, rather than just "DER NERT RERMERVE TERG DERMMIE"
