Exhaust options for an 07 Prius?

That's a 'jake brake' and, no, I don't think the Prius uses exhaust backpressure to aid engine braking.

Re: baffle -- the one I was thinking of was one the intake side.

I haven't pulled the cold air plumbing on my Prius, but on a bud's Corrolla there was this section of weirdly textured baffle stuff between the air inlet and the air filter box. Maybe the Prius doesn't have this, but if it does, removing that should help with making more noise. It's not exhause note, but it will sound different, and louder. What the car magazines call "intake thrash" or something. But it's a free mod, and your Prius will be slightly different from the others going down the highway. And you can tell people it adds 10HP and 2MPG.

As to the exhaust system on a Prius, pretty conventional, cat, pipe, muffler, tailpipe. I was thinking a local muffler shop might be way cheaper than getting the bolt on stuff (Tom's is $700, Ganador nearly $600) for a tweak like this, but you never know. Just pointing out another option.

 

Seriously, I do think there is an engineering problem with the Prius concept that should actually be remedied.

As noted in other posts, people near the car may not notice it when the IC engine is not running (such as walking across a supermarket parking lot). I have noticed this first hand and I think it is a real danger for pedestrians getting hit by hybrid type cars.

I believe the answer should be a small buzzer (or engine sounding hum) that would actually be activated whenever the car is in motion but the IC engine is off. Think of those annoying reverse beepers that some vehicles use as an example. To be clear, the unit should make a relatively quiet sound comparable to a car engine idling that is barely audible from inside the car (no VROOM VROOM sounds...)

I actually think this should be mandated by the government, similarly to brake lights and other basic safety components.

That's my 2 bits - now everyone can get back to insulting each other.....

LESS DAMAGE to pedestrians??? The cars already use lots of plastic... and the tires: well, they are made of rubber... don't you think that's soft enough? Maybe that's why Toyota only recommends 33 PSI for tire pressure and not 40 PSI....

Better yet, we can put airbags all over the outside of the car !!

Nothing like the sound of a 4 cylinder engine at 4,500 RPM spitting through a 'Chock full o' Nuts' exhaust can. Just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!!

M'mm boy, I'd trade that sound any day other than, say, some wimpy 454 sporting twin Holley's burning wide open with straight pipes.

Let's see your dad is 55 and wants to put a fart can muffler on a Prius??? Someone help me here...

I don't know, maybe I'm old school, but really the sound of a loud 4 cylinder is like fingernails on the chalkboard, it has a girlie or wimpy sound. I suppose it boils down to a matter of opinion, I really prefer 4 or 6 cylinder engines to be quiet.

Well, that is the impression that is imparted from reading your posts.

 

There's nothing quite like a well driven car with a manual transmission to demonstrate the driver's skill...a well timed heel-and toe downshift, for example...

This is something I love to hear!

But a car with an automatic --- or worse, a PSD like the Prius --- is, I think, better seen and not heard. I mean, the engine doesn't make mechanical music like, say, a Porsche, the driver has no control over the RPM's, and the exhaust note of a smaller 4-banger isn't perhaps the prettiest sound out there...sounds like a good case for keeping the stock muffler.

Also, regarding your age, 22 *is* young!!!

Well mine already has foam pipe insulation in the grill that should help front impact. I suppose I could wrap my Prius in bubble wrap and duct tape while I'm at it. :lol: (Might as well add tin foil to protect from alien mind probes too.)

Or there's Floam. Dang. Could you imagine a whole Prius covered in Floam? I'd love to see that in a Floam commercial. "Make your Prius safer with Floam."

The best bet is to start an exercise program, get out and start walking at least. If pops is falling asleep at 55, he may be dead by 65!
