2008 Prius making engine noises and engine code

    Hi guys,
    My 2008 prius seems to make a slight bit more noise compared to normal for the past 4-5 months. In addition, when I let it park for more than 15-20 minutes, it often seems like its revving up slightly in a rhythmic sort of pattern. It will revv up for a second, then go back down, and then revv up again, and down again. And during this time it will put up the engine light. If I turn the Prius off, and then turn it back on, it doesn't make that kind of noise anymore, but it has the engine light on for the next 1-2 days.

    Went to Autozone and checked the codes when the engine light was on, and they gave me the code of P0011. It said 'most likely solution' is to replace the oil control valve. Should I go ahead and replace the valve (I think like 80-90 dollars at an auto parts store for the part and a few youtube videos to show how to replace it) or do I need to call in a mechanic to have other things checked like timing chain and so on. From my understanding, those things are a bit more complicated for someone to check themselves. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

    Oil change comes to mind really dirty oil doesn't allow that tensioner and stuff like that to work properly flushing the oil out and putting in clean oil many times absolves that for a good while maybe check it out.

    Ok, will try doing an oil change. To flush out the oil, should i just pour oil through it as I keep the drainage plug out and let it drain until it is clear?

    No you could put some motor flusher that sort of thing in the oil drive the piss out of it for about 25 mi then drain everything off while it's hot let it stand open about 20 minutes and just drain then fill with the proper oil generally today we're using synthetic 5 weight 30 for the one NZ engine if you're 2010 and newer you're running zero 20

    I've been hearing some sort of rattling engine noise as well, not sure if that could be because of a timing chain issue. can a timing chain problem also result in a p0011 issue?

    About how much does it cost to have a timing chain replaced, if anyone knows? thanks

    In Miami there should be a wide variation in pricing depending upon who and how and what methodology is used whether you're going to have somebody come and do it at your house You're going to take it to a shop down in the right part of Miami or what have you with an older car like this you don't have some of the fears of a late model very expensive car getting repaired things being stolen and whatnot the whole car disappearing whatever so there are some leeway I would say you're looking at about $700 pretty easily that's if you round up the parts and have everything ready to go for the person coming to do the work or however you're managing this If you're dropping it off at a dealership or a large place with lots of signage and lots of car wraps on vehicles and things like that while you're paying for all that so prices will go up rent district and all that creates that so whatever you can do away with and not pay for could be better on you. To be real honest about it at the age of your 2008 if you don't know a whole lot about it It might be similar to changing the engine if the car was in real good shape and you were dedicated and going to keep it a long time might be prudent just depends on conditions and what is known.

    That definitely sounds like a lot. I've been watching some videos, and usually do minor repairs myself. Wondering if people often do such jobs themselves to save money, or for this job it's unwise to do it yourself without a mechanic.

    'often' is not something we would know. you can find quite a few here, but how much previous experience each one had is not always spelled out.
    it has to be something you are reasonably comfortable with, and have the time and all the correct tools.

    You’re parked with the car fully on (Toyotas term is Ready), maybe with constant AC use? Regularly?
