Featured Prius Prime Name Change for Model Year 2025 to be known as Prius Plug-in Hybrid

Seems more sensible. Like the Gen 3 Plug-In.

 

What other changes will they make? Rear hatch leak potential will no doubt get extra scrutiny...

What about strange tire size that makes options limited and hard to find when its time to replace? Probably not...

What about complaint of less storage space and roof too low? Raising the roof height even a little would be nice, but probably not till Gen 6 if that ever happens?

And how about some improvements to all the complaints about the user interface? Ditching their entertainment system for Android OS would be awesome, but that's not how big corporations operate...

Also, it sure would be nice if the new version of whatever they call Toyota techstream was pre-installed in the vehicle as onboard diagnostics, which will never happen because that'd be way too smart and Toyota is too cheap and always hungry for to much proprietary control to add a computer to handle an integration like that, but sure would be fun for nerds like us.

 

I think that the prime label was introduced back in 2017 for the north american market for the prius PHEV .At that time , people were still trying to understand the difference between ICE and Hybrid .....so imagine adding Plug-in Hybrid in the picture. Today the prime label has lost it's shine with the introduction of the EV vehicule . ...PHEV label is universal .

 

Americans are dumb. It's why Chrysler went with just hybrid for the Pacifica.
Ford also did well with using a non-generic name in Energi for their PHEVs during the time of the PiP.

My commentary: Even before I became a 'Toyota owner', I knew what the Prime name meant. Does the general public just really not know, so this makes sense? Maybe so.

Either way, mine will always a be "Prime"

I am surprised that the 2025 Prius PHEV was announced before the 2025 Prius HEV.

It looks like there are no changes other than the name change.

The upcoming months will be a good opportunity to buy a 2024 Prius HEV or a 2024 Prius Prime PHEV with deep discounts below MSRP before the 2025 models arrive, as the dealer lots will be overflown with 2024 models. I would trade in my 2021 Prius Prime Limited, but the Prius Prime PHEV is really expensive, and I don't want to have car payments after the fifteen left.

 

In this era of SEO (search engine optimization), having “Plugin Hybrid” in the car name probably includes the Prius in search results more often than the once removed “Prius Prime ISA Plugin Hybrid”

 

I don’t disagree but that angers me on a visceral level.

 

Now that it is called PiP again, even Mr. @bisco might get one because of nostalgy for his old PiP.

I think the main reason by Toyota is to make it clear that the car is a PHEV. When you say Prius Prime, it doesn't really mean anything. Calling it Prius PHEV explicitly states what it is. Every other car maker does the same. Toyota was the only one who used “Prime” instead of PHEV. With the electrification plans intensifying, Toyota wants to clarify and better identify their cars. I wish they would start calling their battery electric vehicles BEV instead of EV as well.

Bummer PPPHEVXP (Pretty Prius Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle [XSE Premium]) doesn't roll off the toung as nicely as PPPXP (Pretty Prius Prime [XSE Premium]).

I get your point , by the way this also applies to Canadians also . The learning curve is a long and winding road , espacially when marketing gurus try to create dumb labels ...I had to explain the difference to many intelligent people ......so in the end some dumb people won't be thinking that the Prius Prime is a product found on Amazon Prime

 

The manufacturing probably has already commenced, and the 2025 Prius HEV and 2025 Prius PHEV should likely hit the US dealers starting in November 2024 if not earlier.

Yeah, it’s dumb, but people at dumb, and it will work better with search engines, as mentioned above. My Bumblebee (name by my son ) will always be a Prime.

 

Name change. Day late & dollar short. Kind of like how it took a good long time for Toyota to ever put their first EV out in the market. Heck - for that matter, by 2008 when several people were building their own plugins out of stock hybrids, many thought the Gen III would be a plug-in ... at least as an option. Boy, weren't we off ... by years.
