Hey guys. I'm replacing the rear shocks and was surprised to see that the OEMs are actually cheaper than KYB at $40 a piece. Is there any reason to go with KYB?
As far as quality goes? Cause looking at the actual shocks they appear different: KYB: https://i.imgur.com/WGcEGvM.jpg OEM: https://i.imgur.com/9KURabv.jpg If KYB offers a bit more firmness in the ride I'd probably prefer that. Anyone know?
I replaced the shocks on our old 2010 at 180ish k miles and went KYB. They’re OEM and they work well. Good luck and keep us posted .
KYB and Genuine Toyota are definitely not the same. They are tuned differently and the Genuine Toyota units last significantly longer. I have seen this multiple times. Also, not all Genuine Toyota shocks and struts are made by KYB - some are made by Tokico.
I am in the market to buy a pair of rear shock absorbers. I was thinking between TRQ and KYB. Now that I see the OEM is around the same price, I will get me OEM shocks... I checked and it seems the part number is 48530-80533
So looking into this further, the OEM shocks do not come with this bumper (which costs as much as the shock itself): Upper Support - Toyota (48755-12100) | Toyota Parts How important is it that it gets replaced with the shocks?

From the page you linked: "Product Details Positions: Left, Right Other Names: Support, Shock Bushing, Shock Support, Shock Absorber Support, Support Rear Suspensi Description: Prius. IM. TC. Notes: Included With Shock Absorber. " (Emphasis added)
Thanks for pointing that out! I may shoot them an email to confirm, seems weird that this $50 item is included with the $36 item (shocks) EDIT: McGeorge's (very quick) response: Part number 48530-80533 does not appear to come with any bushings. It would just be the shock with the top nut. The description is handled by a third party, so it is unfortunately inaccurate. We apologize for the error. EDIT2: What I ended up doing is getting the OEM shocks from McGeorge and then getting two KYB SM5840 mounting kits for ~$60 from RockAuto. Hopefully this works out OK
I got here while looking for comparisons between Toyota and kyb. I have used both on separate Gen 2 Prius and I noticed that the kyb degraded more quickly. I would say, lacking any test equipment, that at 80,000 miles, the kyb were noticeably less effective in preventing nose dive. Now I'm at 257,900 miles on the car (about 90,000 on the kyb) and I think I will replace with Toyota shocks because it's such a hassle for me to replace shocks (all the things I have to get out of the way.)
