The welding that secures my exhaust pipe to the hanger that is bolted onto the bottom of the car (2010 Prius) has rusted through. Any ideas for re-attaching it? Mechanic shops want to replace the whole exhaust system rather than do a bit of welding. Could I just wrap some copper wiring around it, or would that cause problems?
Have you tried going to an exhaust shop like Midas muffler but the private version thereof this is where the people with V8 and dual exhaust pipes would be taking their cars they don't ask a lot of questions and they do what they're told I don't see serious issues on your pipe or that bracket that tell me it can't be welded Yes you could wrap some type of wire or a metal equal to a panduit strap they do make those not the clamp necessarily but anyway something like that would work probably wonderfully Not sure if you can get it tight enough for all undulations the car might make but probably close enough to be good with it but I can't believe of exhaust shop will tell you they can't help you That's pure I don't know I didn't even look to see where you live but that's kind of funny but a mechanic shop yes they're going to tell you why not just replace the whole pipe or the section of the exhaust or what have you You can do that yourself it unbolts I think but I wouldn't personally replace that pipe for that bracket being unwelded.
Should be fine to mickey mouse it and wrap hanger wire around it, better than letting be loose until you find a welder.
Thanks guys. I used a strip of galvanized pipe hanger strap with 1/4” nuts and bolts to secure the exhaust pipe. I also used the pipe hanger strap to re-secure the heat shield, which had corroded around the bolt and was rattling like a can of nails at certain RPMs. It’s amazing how much quieter the car runs now.
If the weld on the pipe is not rusted through, get an exhaust U clamp, drill a hole into the flat part of the broken of part and bracket. Then fasten one leg of the U bolt to the hole.
I like what you did there. I used a cheap hose clamp from a dryer ventilation duct (link to my post about this) and the car is dead silent now.
You ever have something you really like, tend to impulse buy. Then when taking stock, start finding stuff, say the three jars of mustard, or whatever. I was rooting through one of my hardware cartons for something the other day; see I’ve got at least three rolls of plumber’s pipe hanger strapping.
