I have a 2012 Prius and last night when I was driving the brake, ABS, and skid lights on the dash all came on at once and have stayed that way. I assume a sensor or something went out. I'm mainly concerned with the cost of fixing it. I can do it myself if need be. It just depends on the time and cost as to whether or not I do it myself or have someone else do it.

not much you can do except take it somewhere that has a prius aware scanner (like a dealer)
the codes and service manual will help them find what is wrong and give you a repair price.
hopefully just a wheel speed sensor or similar.

Check underneath, at each wheel, to see whether a wheel speed sensor pigtail became loose or disconnected from the body harness. If you’re not sure, disconnect and reconnect the pigtail to the wheel sensor.

Lots of brake boosters (master cylinder with ecu) go bad. They were part of an extended warranty for 10 years or 150k miles. See attached.

For a 2012 that warranty has expired but occasionally Toyota has made exceptions. Otherwise it is around $2500 installed at a dealer with no easy aftermarket options. Hybrid Pit in Southern California has a rebuild service using your Brake Booster for less than $600. However this will have your car down for an extended period.

Some buy the part for $1100 and install. It requires Techstream or a high end scanner to set it up.

^ This. The warning lights only tell you that the trouble codes have to be read. There are a couple hundred possibilities that all turn those lights on, and some are expensive and some are quite readily fixable, so it doesn't pay to guess and worry.

However, you are not limited to taking the car somewhere that has a scan tool. If you don't have a suitable tool yourself, you can get the trouble codes from those lights without one, like this:

Well I found my scanner and it says c0300, c0700, and c0a00.

What scan tool or app are you using?

I do not think those three trouble codes are valid trouble codes for a Prius.

Yes, what app is that? There seem to be several things bogus in that screenshot:

    • all the codes it is showing are C codes, but it describes them all as "Engine and Transmission", which is for P codes.
    • it shows the same fortune cookie "Fuel Volume Regulator Control Circuit High" for three different codes
    • that fortune cookie actually goes with the P0004 code
    • a Prius v doesn't have a fuel volume regulator control circuit
    • and if it had one, any codes about it would be P codes
    • none of C0300, C0700, or C0A00 is a familiar Prius code

Whatever app that is, it probably doesn't belong very high on the recommended list.

If the brake, ABS, and skid lights are on, those codes can be retrieved this way (with no depending on a possibly wacky app):

    This is the app:
OBD2 Scanner: Car Diagnostics - Apps on Google Play

I was wondering about that because I saw another post on here with the same codes and someone said they weren't valid. I couldn't get some of the other apps to connect. I might try a PC app or go the with the wire shorting method.

Try a different app like Car Scanner ELM OBD2. Search for it on Google play store.

^ This. Nothing wrong with shopping around trying different apps, but no need to go without knowing why your car is lighting the brake, ABS, and skid lights while you do that. It would be better to have the trouble codes: Blink (a/k/a Flash) Codes – How to. | PriusChat

This other app is giving a C1391, which seems to be an internal brake fluid leak of the brake actuator assembly. A two second google suggests there was a recall and the dealer might fix it for free. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Thanks everyone. I'll keep you posted for anyone else that may come across this.

The brake actuator is not covered any longer (it was covered for 10 years or 150k miles, whichever comes first). See post #4.

Ps, at least you now know what the problem is with the car, but it will be expensive to fix.

Out of curiosity, how many miles on the car?

There is about 196k on the car. The dealer quoted $3k to fix it, unfortunately. I didn't realize this was a salvage title either. We bought it used a year ago, maybe more, after the original one was in an accident.

This post is pretty much exactly what I am facing:
2011 Prius - C1391: Abnormal Leak of ACC PRESS | PriusChat

I've noticed that whirring sound since I've had it. It happens every few seconds. I'm surprised the code is just now coming up. Trying to decide if it's worth fixing it or if I should just deal with the hassle of getting another car.

the whirring sound is normal. as it increases in frequency and duration, the actuator is slowly wearing out.
when it reaches a falls outside of the parameters set in the software, the trouble lights and code is set

Yeah, my other Prius made the noise occasionally. But this one has done it every few seconds since we've had it. It probably slowly increased in frequency without me realizing but it's always been a lot more frequent. They filled up the brake fluid and the lights went off for a while. They came back on not too long after that. I checked the brake fluid again and it's much lower than when they filled it. Looks like I'll have to make a decision sooner rather than later.

$3k is probably too much to spend on a 2012 Prius pushing 200k miles. Opinions?

I think it's a great time to bail out. That brake booster is only one of the expensive things that happens to v's of that age. Why wait for the others to show up?

Where is the fluid going? Normally it does not lose fluid even with the common brake booster failure. Typically a brake booster flush will turn off the lights for a day or two.

Losing fluid means a leak. There are no vacuum passages to the engine on this all electric brake by wire system.

if solving the fluid leak doesn't fix it, i would move on, but not to another high mileage hybrid

Your guess is as good as mine. I don't see anything on the floor. It probably only leaks when driving.
