    Hello,
this is regarding a 2019 advanced prime. new to me I doubt it was ever done

I asked the dealer if there are software updates to the vehicle. He said there is no such thing. of course I looked on the forums and it appears as though there was.

I'm just trying to understand if it is necessary.

It would be nice if Toyota provided a list of change logs

does anybody know what items have been addressed?I don't to reset all of our settings

I have a 2018 Prime Advanced and there definitely have been of few campaigns that were fixed via software updates.
One I remember vividly was one concerning the Prime going through a carwash and driving the senors nuts.

were there any regarding brakes?I'm mostly thinking about the brakes being used a little bit more to ensure it cleans up rust. I don't know if that's a thing or not.

My dealership is not aware of any updates.

Without using a dealership, how would a Prius owner go about getting and installing these updates?

Dealers use a tool called a "Techstream". I believe it's available to 3rd Party service locations.

There are two types of software updates. Mandated safety updates and TSB updates, well both are TSB's, to fix customer complaints/issues.
Of course the safety updates MUST be installed, the others are only installed if a customer complaints about the TSB issue. Dealerships don't want to install a software patch, for fear that it will break something else that you do use on a frequent basis.
You'll have to some research and lookup TSB's and complaint to the dealership of that very issue. They'll probably tell you they can't reproduce the issue, that's when you mention the TSB states to reflash/update the firmware.

Another alternative is to find a dealership willing to update all your software to the latest versions.

    Hope this helps.....

Well, I still have a 2018 and 2020 in the household... and there have been multiple software update campaigns for Canadian builds for both of these years.

However, it does help to be specific since there are a lot of modules/subsystems in almost any modern car that are subject to their own software updates. For instance, the head unit on the Advanced/Technology is one of those. To make it more confusing, the head unit can be more frequently updated for the maps alone (I do so every two years).

I would go to another dealer for a second opinion. Preferably one that is up-to-date in training their staff.
For instance, at my dealer, only technicians trained to service hybrids are allowed to touch these cars. Even for simple tasks as oil changes. Overkill? Perhaps.
Also at my dealer, the service advisor is able to search and find updates for these various systems, both optional/recommended and mandatory/safety campaign updates as the cars are being admitted. But then, once in the service bay, there have been times the technician was able to identify more once the vehicle was plugged in to TechStream.
Anyhow, I keep all the service invoices for this reason, not just to show the cars were serviced at proper intervals but also all the minor and TSB campaigns.

    Cheers

Can do, and should do, are both worth consideration. Have you got any problems with the car?

I don't have a subscription to tecstream, so don't know what TDS updates are available. I get it that they don't want to mess up customer settings. I don't want to reset mine also. I get that. Mine is a 2019 Advanced Package in Canada. is fully loaded.

I guess calling around might be the only way

are there components that go bad if they're not updated? does the software update help that?

sounds like they should have this information when they plug in the tecstream themselves as you say. I think the main task for me at this moment is trying to figure out if there is anything I need specifically.

no issues with the car, but when you first getThe car I would want to take care of everything of consequence. are you suggesting that is just not worth it since there are no issues?

Yes. With our Gen 3 I only got the software update intended to improve protection to the inverter when accelerating; that one was a recall.

that’s not to say they’re all frivolous, but don’t assume they’re mandatory.

I know there was a few updates on your large informatics screen. Lots of people complaining the screen would reset during a drive. I've got the small 7" screen and only noticed it reset once or twice so far. So once every 18 months isn't too bad; but I don't use the nav functions either.
Your car functions isn't gonna "go bad", if you don't update the firmware. Firmware updates are suppose to make the unit function more reliability and consistently - not have to reset itself as often. That's the default for most cpu controlled units that's not a critical system, when they sense a problem - automatic restart.
