    hello everybody.
i have been following discusions on the priuschat site for the last 3 years.
now after my project i decided to share the results with you so i signed up here.
i own a 3rd gen prius 2011 with 325.000km. up until 2 days ago i had a bad battery. i have a carista obd with dr.prius and tourqe app.
    i diagnosed 10 bad cells.
in a year and a half its gone from bad to worse. year and a half ago i had a check hybrid system error every 1000km or so.
last 6 months it went from 200km to maybe just 10km or less before it showed me the error again.
10 used cells would cost me 500eur plus work so i decided i would try doing it myself even if it kills me...
so i waited and waited and would you know it.... 5 days ago there was an ad for prius 2nd gen for parts. i bought the whole battery for 350eur because we didnt know the state it was in.
thats right! i bought 2nd gen battery.
i bought it because i wanted to see if the cell fit in 3rd gen. nobody on the forum did it yet. i already knew i can sell the shell of the battery to a service center for 200eur which i already did.
    so the result:
2nd gen cells in my 3rd gen are working perfectly after two days.
it cost me 150eur plus 10eur gasoline.
did the work myself roughly 5 hours.

well its been 15 months. i've made a whole lot of kilometers...after the 2nd wave of corona taxi business had a 3 month boom. i admitt i've worked just about nonstop. feared of more corona waves.... made more than 30.000km in 3 months alone. in 15 months since my last post little over 60kkm. i now have almost 400kkm on my gauge and yup.... battery still working fine.

Do you have any update on this? I have a 2010 and found a 2008 with an OEM replaced battery and 30k miles on it I'm debating buying to do the same thing you did.

All modules are the same design and manufacturer from 2004-2015. Toyota has changed supplier/manufacturer for factory replacement batteries with the past 2 years. It is always best to source modules from newer manufacture dates but they will work.

I hate to bring up such an old thread but I have a question. Is there any visual difference at all between the 2nd Gen cells and 3rd Gen cells? I have a 2nd Gen and I'm considering buying a new 3rd Gen battery from the dealer, swapping the cells and returning the 3rd Gen pack with my old cells back as the core. BUT, id sure hate for them to reject my core. So hoping they are visually identical.

The Gen 2 and 3 modules are identical on the exterior, and can be differentiated only by serial number date codes.
The Gen 4 NiMH is also 100% interchangeable with the Gen 2/3, but is slightly different on the top. It has no impact on how it installs or functions. I've made a few Gen 2 batteries using Gen 4 wrecks. NiMH batteries from newer wrecks are relatively affordable and work great for DIYing a Gen 2 refresh.

So just to clarify....I can redo my 2nd Gen battery pack using all 2022 Prius battery cells? They will all swap in fine and the bottom screws and all the original wiring and orange covers and temp sensors and the top flexible vent tubes and all of that will all work on 2022 Prius cells?

Yes. By replacing your old cells with new NiMH 2022, everything will work.

Ventilation tubes may not be used. The new cells have a modified safety pressure relief system

Photo image with priuschat. The modules are the same size.

I thought the 2022 had a lithium battery....is there a way to tell which Prius had lithium vs NiMh?

I'm guessing this the wrong pack saying Li-Ion on it. Are there other vehicles that shared the same cells?

High-voltage batteries for Prius were produced as NiMH and lithium.
NiMH batteries (G9510-47130) was installed on the ZVW50 body.
Lithium batteries (G9510-47120) was installed on the ZVW51 body.
Accordingly, different components were used for different batteries, which are not interchangeable.
