Hello, I have a 2016 Prius. My question is: If I wanted to replace one of the tire sensors, does it need to be programmed? Thx in advance.
Toyota tire sensors have a built-in ID code. You program the car's TPMS computer to look for that code. That takes an OBD2 scan tool with more than just the basic functions (which are talking to the engine controller), but not much more. It just has to have the ability to communicate with the TPMS computer. A lot of tire dealers have a tool that can do this. Aftermarket sensors are usually programmed with the ID code to match the original sensor. Since the car looks for a sensor with that ID code, it thinks it's talking to the original sensor. Most shops that install aftermarket sensors have the specific tool that programs their sensors. A lot of the aftermarket sensors are junk - IMO.
